June, 2009:

Morning Run FAIL

I was still really sore from the crazy workout the Ambitious One put me through on Sunday (1,000 yds in the pool followed by a 10.4 mile walk/run), so I skipped my weights last night, knowing I’d already committed to a weight workout Wednesday, so I’d get my minimum 1 time in this week.

This morning, I had my alarm set for 5:35 AM to get up & do some hill repeats before work. But I was up all night with a tight, tight chest and nasty cough. I could hardly breathe. I remember telling the architect I couldn’t run because the cold was in my chest. When the alarm went off this morning, I told the architect I felt like crap & was going to have to skip my run. When my alarm went off again one hour later, I was so confused. People, I think I dreamed the sick. I feel fine. The architect says I was not up all night coughing & wheezing, and he’s a light sleeper, so he would remember.

However, it was probably best that I skipped the run for another day of rest. My right ITB is painfully sore, and I’m trying to remember that although I can exercise through aches I should not exercise through pains. That way lies madness, and injury, and having to take three months off of running and missing my marathon again.

So – I’m going for a quick post-work walk before heading over to a friend’s to drink wine. I totally ditched her with no phone call a couple of weeks ago, which is lame & inexcusable. She consented to forgive me, but I am totally going to bribe her into more forgiveness. Last night, I purchased the most expensive bottle of wine at my corner store. Oh yeah, people. I am a big spender!

PARTY TIME!

Heya – if you are a local person who I know well enough to invite over to my home, and you did not receive an evite from regarding my upcoming party, let me know (that includes all PBRs [JM & I made the executive decision that PBR, portland blogger/runners was way more appropriate than the former title of PB&J] that have attended any happy hours and/or group runs). It has come to my attention that some of the evites did not go through, even though evite knows my invitees (well enough for it to tell me their favorite drinks, even). I don’t want people to not come because evite is all crazy (like when it refused to invite me to JM’s birthday drinks last year, and I cried myself to sleep for a week over the heartbreak & rejection).

So – let me know if you think you should be partying with me on Saturday, I’ll email you the details.

Win Shoes!

You all know my deep & abiding love for shoes…and now you know how generous I am. I am linking to a blog entry that will allow you to enter for a chance to win a new pair of shoes (or at least $75 worth of shoes….). I am doing this because I love you readers. Although, if you forgot to go enter, that would make my chances a little better, and if I did win, I would post pictures of my new shoes (because again, I am a giver)!

So – go visit Steve (you should be visiting Steve on a regular basis anyway – that is one fantastic blog) and enter (or not) to win a gift certificate from onlineshoes.com (which contrary to what I told Steve in my blog comment may be the one online shoe store I’ve never purchased a pair of shoes from).

Happy Monday!

Training Goals 6/15 – 6/21

And the recap from the week ending today:

Goals

Bike twice (Tuesday & Saturday): I biked once (Tuesday)- which is way more than last week. Go me!

Weights twice (Monday & Wednesday): I weighted once (Monday) which is the same as last week, and then I couldn’t move my arms for three days….so, partial success

Swim once (Wednesday): I swam Sunday – 1,000 yards, so that’s good!

Yoga once (Thursday): I made it this week and was the class example for wheel pose:

Run 2-3 times (Tuesday, Friday, Sunday and MAYBE Thursday): The goal should’ve read to run 3-4 times, as three is the minimum number. And it was achieved – I ran Tuesday, Friday & Sunday. Thursday’s run was skipped due to power outage that caused me to oversleep.

Feel free to mix up workout days….just no dropping the cross-training, dammit! – I did my pushups twice (yay) and abs twice (woo), and ended up with a hike on Saturday with the architect instead of a bike, so I logged 12 hours & 23 minutes of activity this week. And that is a lot for me.

Also, no skipping long runs due to mojitos. That is not cool. I had a mojito-free week! More success!

This week’s goals

Monday: Weights + elliptical to round out to an hour

Tuesday: Morning Run (Hill repeats)

Wednesday: Post-work weights (with AO & maybe her, too!) then a swim

Thursday: AM bike (maybe), PM yoga

Friday: Trail run & new gym class (with AO)

Saturday: Long run of 12-14 miles

Sunday: Afternoon bike ride

Today is hotter than it seems

I just finished a great 6 mile run. Well, almost great. It is warmer than I thought outside and about 1/4 mile away from home (at the beginning of the run), I realized I really had to pee. I thought about going back, but I knew if I went back, I might feel the urge to check my email. I also knew that in about 1.5 miles, I would be running by a park, so I would just stop there.

It was great, though, because I was feeling great today (other than the bladder issue).  My first mile came in at 10:22 – which is just where I like to be for a mid-distance Friday run.  Mile 2 came in at 10:02. I was concerned that I was going to fast (I was so close to the park, and was getting eager), but I never really ran out of steam.

Park #1 – no visible bathroom

Park #2 – no visible bathroom

My 3rd mile was a bit slower (10:39) – I was actually running THROUGH park #2 looking for a bathroom. I didn’t find one. (I did find a water fountain though – which brought up an interesting conundrum…I am very thirsty, but also very much have to pee….what to do!)

Park #3 – no visible bathroom

Mile 4 was my desperate mile – I came in at 9:42. After that, though, I knew I was headed home & would be out no more than 20ish minutes. Also, I think the hot & sweat made my body reabsorb the urine (ewwwww), so the urge finally passed.

Park #4 – no visible bathroom

Miles 5 & 6 seemed super hard & slow, so I’m surprised that I came in at 10:45 (well, that’s not a surprise) & 10:01 (SURPRISE!) for those.

Overall, finished in 1:01:37 – a great time (for me) for a 6 mile mid-afternoon run in the summer.

Now – it’s finally time to shower & drink some beer.
