June, 2009:

WOO! Good News! (and porn)

I didn’t mention this on the blog (there are actually a lot of aspects of my life that I don’t talk about here – I know, you’re shocked that it’s not all gardens, running & shoes), but although I did tell you that I’d gotten into grad school, I didn’t mention that I thought I was going to have to drop out before it had even begun. I hadn’t gotten my financial aid notice, and classes start Monday. When I registered for classes, I put them all on my credit card. Today was the last day to drop classes & get all my money back. Today, I got my financial aid award information – and I’m covered. So, starting on Monday, I am officially a grad student.  This weekend we are not camping, because I don’t like to camp in the rain.

Instead, we will finish our patio, do some hiking & running, and light some fires (in our firepit, of course).

Also – PORN!!  As a result of the voting a few weeks ago, I got some shoes. Although not the ones that everyone voted for, because y’all voted for the wrong ones.

Instead, I got shoes #1. And I love them!

I had originally posted the brown ones (which have turquoise colored stones), but ended up buying the black. Although I may go ahead & get the brown ones, too.  They’re so awesome.

The second pair was purchased because my cute comfy flats that I like to wear when I’ll be standing for many hours died a horrible death (I’ve had three shoe-nerals in the last month…so sad).

So – I got these:

Aren’t they so cute? And they were on clearance. (If you click through the link, they are only in kids’ sizes, but I have seen bonafide adults wearing them, so they must come in adult sizes somewhere. And yes, mine are kids’ shoes. I’m wee.)

I will work on more shoe porn for next week. Next week is going to be shoe porn for men by special request.

Corn Chronicles (Part IV)

It is time for your weekly corn update! (I am fully aware that this is probably not nearly as interesting as the suspiciously absent shoe porn feature, but I love my garden so much.)

The corn is having quite a growth spurt lately – even the crazy storm last Thursday couldn’t keep it down for long!

Carrie Corn (still the biggest in the garden) is about 2 feet at her tallest point (an 8-inch growth spurt in the last week). James Corn, who was a measly 7″ last week is now pushing 12″ – and was one of the few corns not knocked over by the storm – his smallness protected him, I believe.

They are getting to that point in their lives where they no longer listen to anything I say, and I think a few of them tried to sneak out of the garden last night – perhaps to meet up with some of the corns down the street.

The rest of the garden is growing like crazy. I think my potatoes are growing a few inches/day, too, and if you look real close, you can see tiny baby broccolis.

I also have baby pumpkins, butternut squashes & yellow squashes.  The bamboo is settling (kind of) into its new home, and I just hope it doesn’t get too crappy looking before recovering.

The architect & I are going camping this weekend, so the garden will be on its own for a few days. I hope those crazy corns don’t get into too much trouble!

Brew Review #6

This was one of the more unique experiences I’ve ever had.  We went to Full Sail here in Portland (their main brewery is in Hood River, of course).  The Full Sail here is in the South Waterfront area & we actually found free parking right away. (SCORE!)

I had a little difficulty finding it. I had in my head that it was next to the McCormick & Schmick’s – and the brewery is. However, if you want to DRINK the beer (which we did), you actually have to go into the McCormick & Schmick’s.  Fortunately, we figured that out fairly quickly.

It was just the architect & I this time – which was probably good, because the only bar table still available was a two-seater.

We were pretty jazzed about the cheap happy hour food (seriously this food was CHEAP) and were both starving after a long day of yard work, so we each ordered a pint of the Slipknot Imperial IPA.

It was really good.

Now, I’m not a very good beer reviewer. I’ve only recently learned how to identify a malty tasting beer. This wasn’t so much malty. It was a delicious hoppy delight, though! We both REALLY enjoyed the beers. They do not, however, have a happy hour beer special, so each pint was $4.75.

The food was a different story. We ordered the chips & salsa to share ($1.95), the architect ordered a cheeseburger & fries ($2.95) and I had the blackened chicken quesadilla ($3.95).

The food was…..alright. It tasted like very cheap food. The quesadilla was so greasy that I needed a new (cloth) napkin about halfway through. We didn’t even finish the chips & salsa (although maybe we’ve just been spoiled by the recent abundence of really good salsa that moved in next door – I think there were also people attached to that salsa, but much less important).

It was only after the server walked away after taking our orders (we were starvin’ marvins – and thirsty), did I realize that I did not order my traditional sampler tray.

So, after the pints were nearly gone, we got a ($9) sampler tray. I really thought that like Deschutes, we would be able to select our own samples (the architect really wanted to try their D-Lite summer special), but no – the six samples were pre-ordained.

We got:

  1. the Full Sail Amber
  2. the regular Full Sail IPA
  3. the Grand Sun IPA
  4. the Full Sail Pale
  5. The Keelhauler Stout
  6. the LTD

Initially, I thought $9 was a bit much for a six-tray sampler (when you don’t even select your own), but they were fairly generous samples:

Our reactions – captured at the moment

  1. Amber – doesn’t even smell good; average taste as long as you don’t breathe it in
  2. IPA – world’s most average IPA; the reason Amy used to think she didn’t like IPAs
  3. Grand Sun IPA – full of delicious yummy hops
  4. Pale – not as bad as Coors Lite; a world of blah (courtesy the architect) and pale in color, intensity AND flavor (that was me)
  5. Keelhauler – very good, but no way I could drink a whole pint of this
  6. LTD – subtle flavors, but still good.

We also had not learned from our previous food mistakes (and the architect was still hungry) so we ordered the hummus plate ($1.95).

You guessed it – bleh.

So – overall it was a pretty cheap night. The total bill (w/o tip) was under $30, and $19 of that was the beer. It was a lot of food for $10, and if you don’t care too much about flavor, that’s a good deal. We didn’t order anything off the regular menu, so not sure if that would’ve been better (although I’m really hoping it would be).

The beers – the special IPAs & the LTD were quite good, but their regular brews were average. If you’d asked me about 3 years ago, I may have given them a more glowing review, but I’m not sure if we just ended up with inferior batches or if in the world of Portland beers, they are just not up to the standards of some of the other breweries.

We had pretty good service, though, considering how busy it was – and although the bar decor was weird, it was a nice location.

I would recommend it for a cheap happy hour if you aren’t that interested in good food but don’t mind paying about $5 for a decent pint.

3 stars (new rating system I just made up right now…..it means nothing)

I am kind of a bad person

So, many of you may know that I am not exceptionally fond of children. I make exceptions for the well-behaved and/or exceptionally cute children of my friends, but I’m not a kid-person.

On my block, there is a house full of small children. Since I have never asked them for an illustrated family branch (not sure they will qualify for a whole tree), I’m not sure of the relationship of all the children, but one sometimes gets the impression that if there aren’t any sister-aunts in the family, it’s just a matter of time.

These children (for lack of a better word) spend a great majority of the time they aren’t in school riding their bikes up & down the block & talking (for lack of a better word) to everyone they run into (which sometimes is literally).

The one child, we shall call him Dennis, is the most annoying friendly. On weekends if the architect & I are working outside, he will show up every 5-10 minutes and say, “Whatcha doin?” (In fact, those are the only words I really understand from him – he has no teeth & a serious case of mush-mouth.)

It doesn’t matter what you tell him, 5 minutes later he’s back, “Whatcha doin?”

So, last weekend, I was digging holes. And in the holes, I was placing big black plastic pots. (Later, in the pots, I put bamboo, but first, just pots.)

So, Dennis & his cousin/sister (not sure, could be both) showed up & asked, “Whatcha doin?”

Me: Digging.

Dennis & c/s: Whatcha digging?

The architect: Dirt.

Dennis & c/s: Whatcha plantin?

*And this is where I got a little evil*

Me: Buckets.

C/S: You can’t plant buckets.

Me: Why not? Where do you think they come from?

There was a little back & forth, but in the end, Dennis & C/S went away from the conversation really excited for next spring when the baby buckets start to sprout. Dennis was even trying to talk a more doubtful C/S into the idea, claiming he’d seen a bucket garden before.

Now part of me kind of wants to take some of my little black plastic start pots (the kind that baby tomatoes come in) and bury them in the dirt, just a little bit sticking out.

The other part of me feels really bad that I lied to impressionable youngsters who believed me because I’m adult.

I’m not sure which part is going to win. Perhaps I have taught them a valuable life lesson about not trusting just anyone, no matter how earnest they seem.

Perhaps I’m just going straight to hell.

Sorry ’bout the delayed brew review. I have all the pics, but left my notes at home! Tomorrow, for sure!

Training Goals – 6/8/09 – 6/14/09

Recap from last week

I ran twice, strength trained once, did pushups twice & abs once.

I did not swim or bike (and I even skipped yoga through no fault of my own).

I did a lot of yard work on Saturday & Sunday – which was definitely some strength training, but mostly, I was LAZY!

Goals for this week

Bike twice (Tuesday & Saturday)

Weights twice (Monday & Wednesday)

Swim once (Wednesday)

Yoga once (Thursday)

Run 2-3 times (Tuesday, Friday, Sunday and MAYBE Thursday)

Feel free to mix up workout days….just no dropping the cross-training, dammit!

Also, no skipping long runs due to mojitos. That is not cool.

In other, non training news- we had a storm on Thursday night! Now, ordinarily I love a good storm. However, I do not love them when they happen as I’m trying to get home rather than when I’m already home. It took me well over 2 hours to get home Thursday, meaning I missed yoga. My main mode of transporation from my office to my car was shut down due to wind. The bridges were all crazy due to accidents & fleet week. The worst part was that I was so afraid that I was going to have to do a new post on Friday showing the garden destruction. Things did not look good when I got home. The corn was flat. Most of the broccoli was laying down. The various squashed were….well….squashed.

The architect & I did what we could to prop everything up, and I spent some time Friday staking & pep talking. By yesterday, you can barely tell they weathered (hee) a storm. So all is good.

Brew review tomorrow!
