Gazelles On Crack Rotating Header Image

October, 2009:

PORN!

Thank you to everyone who voted, including my wonderful architect.

On Tuesday, I placed the order.

I ordered from Zappos (I stopped frequenting them as much when they took away the free overnight shipping, as Endless still offers that). I got the free shipping, because I am cheap & the shoes were not. I expected them to arrive in a week. Lo and behold! Just an hour after placing my order, I got an email from Zappos letting me know that I’d been upgraded to special fancy priority shipping and that I am truly a  goddess among shoe owners (or something like that). The shoes shipped out Tuesday. I received them yesterday. My heels are bleeding today. They are cute. And I think soon they will cause less bleeding – it takes awhile for patent leather to conform – and I ended up walking a LOT more today than I’d anticipated.

However, my office mate had bandaids (hello kitty, even) and now my heels are protected! It’s like a Halloween miracle.

And, because this is not NEW shoe porn, and I am a giver, I want to present you with some really nice fall boots that you should buy (and if you don’t need more boots [ha!] and have a lot of extra money, I wear a size six, and will send you my address).

Brew Review #9 & #10

I have really fallen off my regular brew review posting habits.

Brew Review #9 – Lucky Lab (August 28, 2009, aka “a really long-ass time ago”)

This was the largest brew review crowd ever! It was so much fun. A lot of my PBRs were there (some of them even ran to the bar, they are that hardcore). The food was decent (I had a couple of pieces of pizza), and there were a number of beer choices (I love that about Lucky Lab – so many beers).

I started out with the sampler tray, which had the following:

  • Red Baron – average, tasty, nothing special
  • Summit IPA – not hoppy enough! okay, again, nothing special
  • Reggie’s Red – pretty good – better on nitro
  • Super Dog – 5 stars! best beer on the tray
  • Alt – I didn’t like this at all!
  • Maibock – pretty damn good.

I also tried a couple of other beers off of Mr. Pi’s sampler tray:

  • Bourbon Baron – 3 thumbs up! (for some reason, the Red Baron aged in the bourbon casks was awesome!)
  • Recession Session – blah & boring

In the end, I ended up ordering a couple of pints of the Super Dog.

This was so much fun! It’s a great location – lots of parking. Although you do have to go order at the bar (no wait service), that really wasn’t a problem. There was a ton of parking. The only bummer is no dogs inside (actually, I don’t care that much, but someone had brought their dog and they got kicked out). The beer wasn’t as good as at some other breweries, but I had so much fun it didn’t matter! (pics from the evening at the end of the post)

Once I’m done reviewing everywhere, I’ll definitely have to make a trip back here!

Brew Review #10 – Lompoc, old AND new (October 9, 2009)

This is a pretty sad review. There are no photos. Or notes. Because it was a spur of the moment review with the architect that did not involve a camera or a pen. I will be honest – I love the Lompoc (both new & old) beers. I love their red & their IPAs. One of their seasonal specials was a hoppy red, and it was good! I had that first. Then the sampler platter. I enjoyed half (3/6) of the sampler, most notably the two IPAs & the red. The stout was a bit too stouty for me, and the golden too pale. I think the last one was okay.

The architect & I had nachos, but then he was still hungry, so he got chicken strips & fries, too.

they have great happy hour prices, and for all the beers (3) and a sampler (1) and two happy hour food specials, it was about $25, which I feel is a decent price.

This is, by the way, the lamest review I’ve ever written. I usually take pretty good notes & pictures.

I guess I just may have to come back when I get to the Ns. And the Os. :)

Brew Review #11 – We are now in the “M’s” and I need your vote!

MacTarnahan’s
Pros: ample parking, close to downtown (there is no info on happy hour on the site that I could find, but did find another site that said it was from 3 – 6)
Cons: loud & crowded, average beer

Mash Tun
Pros: new, interesting, decent IPA (I’ve heard), great neighborhood (happy hour is 4-6)
Cons: no website (yes, that is a con, bite me!), variable reviews on quality and service

Max’s Fanno Creek Brew Pub
Pros: new, interesting, apparently good beer selection; it also appears that they have a happy hour (although I might have to call to make sure); on the #12 bus line if you’re coming from downtown or Barbur Blvd.
Cons: Tigard!

McMenamin’s
Pros: pretty good happy hour (3-6), multiple locations, the buildings are (almost) always very interesting
Cons: average beers, average food, average service

I am thinking that this will take place on Nov 13 at happy hour time. If you think you can make it, please vote! (You can vote even if you can’t make it – I won’t hold it against you.

Possible Good News

It seems that, just perhaps, some of my feeling bad was due to not exercising instead of the other way around. I had a great weights workout tonight (at my fancy pants new gym where I saw my neighbor AND my cousin).

I ran 1/2 mile tonight, as well. Without any physical discomfort. The 1/2 mile was just my cardio warm-up for the main event (weights!), but it was kinda nice. I might have to try that running thing again.

Fingers crossed that the worst is behind me.

Product Review – POM Wonderful juices

This is a bit on the late side, but I definitely wanted to get it in.

Perhaps you remember my review of POM back in July.  If you don’t want to go read it, the gist is “I love it and want to marry it and have it’s pomegranate babies.”

Not long after that, I received another shipment of POM Wonderful beverages. These were iced coffee drinks with anti-oxidants or something. These I did not love, but I didn’t really want to say anything, because I love the company so much. They left a weird aftertaste in my mouth – much like the aftertaste I get from things like Cool Whip & other fake foods. However, I did use the last one in a smoothie, and that was quite delicious.

Apparently my lack of review did not completely anger the super people at POM, because about a month ago, I got more stuff! This time, it was some mixed juices – a pomegranate kiwi and a pomegranate nectarine. They were in slightly larger bottles, so I shared with the architect.

He loved the juices. A lot. I enjoyed them thoroughly. Not as much as he did, though. I think I prefer the original POM.

However, I was SO INSPIRED by these wonderful juices (which really were good, even if they didn’t quite measure up to the wonderful-ness of the first POM Wonderful I tried) that I actually went out and bought an actual pomegranate.

Fortunately, there are instructions on the website so when I get brave enough to eat it, I can figure out exactly how to do that.

In conclusion – POM is a great company (especially Janny!) and I love their juices. And hopefully I love the fruit, too, and it isn’t too intimidating!

Training Goals 10/26 – 11/1

I don’t have any.

I know – shocker! BUT – I am taking the rest of the month off – and honestly, most of November, too. And by off, I mean off of posting my training goals!

I am starting to feel bad having to write FAIL! after all my goals, and since last week, I did very little, I would have to write FAIL! after five of the seven days (I totally hit my rest day).

I am not recovering as quickly as I’d hoped from the marathon + the sick, and decided to just take it easy. That is not to say that I will not be exercising, I am just going to run when I feel like running and not run when I don’t. I am getting to the point, though, where I’m wondering if I feel like crap because I’m not exercising or if I’m not exercising because I feel like crap!

Some things I am willing to share for this upcoming week.

I totally plan to run at least twice. But just little runs.

I think I might go to yoga tonight at my new gym. Maybe.

I have a strength assessment tomorrow night at my new gym.

I am going to stick with my plan to ride my bike to work once a week throughout the winter. I pick that day based on the weather of course. As of now, I am planning on Wednesday!

This weekend is my third wedding anniversary. The architect & I will be taking a one night vacay to a B&B (the same B&B where we spent our honeymoon) and then come home for a romantic night of delicious dinner (thanks to the best menu consultant in the blogosphere – full menu to follow AFTER the festivities) and trick-or-treaters.

This week also marks the start of class #4 in my grad school adventure (still keeping those 4.0 dreams alive), so I imagine that will take up some time, as well!

So – to recap: I am going to do what seems best to me. I have a plan, I am just not sharing it with you. Not because I don’t love you, but because I love me!

And – a shout-out to blogless Christine for finishing her first marathon this weekend! Way to go Christine!

And – just to keep you coming back – this week we will have a product review (spoiler – it is delicious), maybe some new shoe porn, a 2009 garden wrap-up, a couple of brew reviews, and something else so super awesome that it was the whole reason I started this paragraph. And now that I decided to save the best for last, I can no longer remember this super awesome blog topic. But I will. Probably. And you will want to know what it is!

So come back!

Please.
