2009:

Hey Snow Lovers

Pyramid is giving away a trip to enjoy snow activities.  You should enter, too. Mostly because if I actually win, I might regret having entered. I am not what you’d call a ‘winter sports person.’

Also – happy xmas eve. I hope santa comes & eats the rest of my cookies before I do!

Year in Review

It’s a bit early to do a year in review, as there are 8.5 days left in 2009, but I promise if something significant happens in the next 8.5 days, I’ll update this post.

There were some ups (first marathon! first triathlon! grad school! the architect is awesome!) and downs (marathons are hard! grad school is hard! the architect is still unemployed!), but overall, not a bad year, all things considered. So, to sum up, I present you with a meme. Because I used all my brain cells on that hard, hard grad school and cannot be original until 2010.

Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I did my best. I did not do a pull-up (but 2010 is my year, bitches). I did read my 52 books (or will if I finish book #52 before the end of the year, and since I only have about 50 pages left, I feel confident that I will). I didn’t run 1,000 miles, but I will end up pretty close to 800, and there’s always next year. I did get into grad school (I’m 2 quarters down & have 8.5 quarters to go).

Did anyone close to you give birth?
My friend Milwaukee Steph!

Did anyone close to you die?
No.

What countries did you visit?
Just the one I live in.

What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
Balance.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I ran a marathon!

What was your biggest failure?
Stressing too much.

What was the best thing you bought?
I love my shiny new laptop, but the best thing might be a plane ticket to South Dakota to surprise my dad on his 60th bday.

Whose behavior merited celebration?
Mine. Duh.

Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Mine. Also duh.

Where did most of your money go?
Food & Running.

What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Running my first marathon, starting grad school.

Compared to this time last year, are you:
Happier or sadder?
Happier.

Thinner or fatter?
Thinner.

Richer or poorer?
Poorer.

What do you wish you’d done more of?
Spent time with the architect.

What do you wish you’d done less of?
Worrying.

How will you be spending Christmas?
With the architect.

Did you fall in love in 2009?
More in love with the architect. Also, with a couple of pairs of shoes that I can’t afford.

What was your favorite TV program?
Castle

Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
I’m not really a hater, but there are some people I’ve met in the last year that I really don’t like.

What was the best book you read?
There are six books that I rated 5 stars on Goodreads, so I guess those are the best books. They are (and if you follow the link & buy the book, I get a tiny bit of money, since they are through my Amazon Associates account, full disclosure, blah blah, FCC):

  1. B is for Beer (by Tom Robbins)
  2. Eleanor of Aquitaine: A Life (by Alison Weir)
  3. Special Topics in Calamity Physics (by Marisha Pessl)
  4. The Namesake (by Jhumpa Lahiri)
  5. The Meaning of Liff (by Douglas Adams & John Lloyd)
  6. Anathem (by Neal Stephenson)

What was your greatest musical discovery?
This hard for me – maybe Metric? I’m loving on them right now. Also Lily Allen.

What did you want and get?
A bigger garden. Admission into grad school. A pressure canner.

What did you want and not get?
A piano. A large inheritance from an unknown wealthy relative.

What were your favorite films of this year?
I am not sure. I liked the Star Trek movie. And Wolverine (mmmm….Hugh Jackman. Also, when searching for that image, I typed Hugh & saw an automatic entry come up, so I hit enter. It was Hugh Hefner. Sexy FAIL!)

What did you do on your birthday?
Ate Mexican food!

How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
Shoes make the outfit.

What kept you sane?
My architect. Running.

Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Well, the above-named Hugh Jackman, of course. Anything else might be slightly…creepy.

What political issue stirred you the most?
Prop 8; universal healthcare.

Who did you miss?
Margaret!

Who was the best new person you met?
My kick-ass neighbors! YAY!

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:
Be present in yourself.

Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Either I’m wrong or I’m perfectly right every time
Sometimes I lie awake, night after night
Coming apart at the seams
Eager to please, ready to fight

(Billy Joel – I Go to Extremes)

The Next Big Thing – Happy Christmas PBRs!

It seems like everywhere I look, people are talking about their 2010 race schedules.

There are marathons, half marathons, triathlons & half-irons being registered for. I’ll admit, I fall victim to this myself, asking every runner I’ve run with in the past couple of weeks, “what’s your next race?”

The next race that I currently have on my schedule (in case you were curious), is the Shamrock run (I’m doing the 15K distance) on March 14.

That is not, however, the next big thing.

This is:

I am officially registered for this race. This is going to be a very different experience from marathon #1, in no small part because half of the runners I know in Portland are running it, too! And there are even some people doing the half!

So, since we’ll all be training about the same time, and doing approximately similar mileages, I’m guessing there will be some post-run brunches in our future.

To that end, I picked up a copy of this to share with my hungry PBRs:

I am pretty excited to dig in (both to the book AND into breakfast). I am also terrified excited about having just signed up for my SECOND marathon (in 4 months, 1 week & 3 days; EEK!).

Other races that I am thinking about doing probably going to do in 2010:

The 2010 (potential) Race Schedule

  • 3/14/10 – Shamrock 15K
  • 4/11/10 – Race for the Roses Half Marathon
  • 4/18/10 – Bridge to Brews 10K
  • 5/2/10 – Eugene Marathon
  • 6/13/10 – Blue Lake Sprint Triathlon
  • 8/1/10 – Midsummer Olympic Triathlon (at Blue Lake)
  • 8/14/10 – XTerra Portland Triathlon (at Hagg Lake)
  • 9/5/10 – Eugene Women’s Half
  • 10/24/10 – Run Like Hell 5K
  • 11/14/10 – Outer Banks Half Marathon

As you can see, I’m planning three half marathons, only (ha!) one full marathon, and three triathlons. With the three shorter distance races, I’m at 10 races for 2010, which seems like a great number! I haven’t locked in everything yet, although I feel pretty confident that the first four will happen, and I know I want to do at least two triathlons this year.

So, internets…what races are YOU doing in 2010?

Still Hacking Away

I feel fine, people. I really, really do! I ran 7 miles yesterday, and today I got up all early & went to the gym to lift some weights. I do not feel sick. Except for every few minutes, when I can feel the crud rattling in my chest warning me that I’m going to be coughing grossly in a couple of minutes.

This cough thing has been going on for almost 10 days now! This is ridiculous! Especially since I actually don’t feel bad at all. If I’m going to be sick, then why can’t I just get sick & get it over with? None of this “almost” sick or “kinda” sick. LAME!

So, I am ready to stop coughing now, because although I actually don’t feel sick, I do feel that ‘hacking up a lung’ is just not as sexy as it used to be. (Perhaps I have consumption!)

Anyways – my plan is to continue to ignore the (not quite) sick until it goes away. Or die beautiful with consumption, a la Ruby Gillis.

Training Goals – 12/21 – 12/27

The recap from last week – warning! It is once again pretty pathetic.

Training Goals – 12/14 – 12/20

Monday: post-work weights – half FAIL! I did hop on the bike trainer for 30 minutes, which is a LOT of workout.

Tuesday: Terwilliger run with the Ambitious One – FAIL! It was super rainy, so I wussed out. And then, it took 75 hours to get home from work, so I vegged instead.

Wednesday: Run – SUCCESS! I ran 5 miles with strangers. go me!

Thursday: rest – SUCCESS! (I haven’t missed a rest day success in a looooong time.)

Friday: Run – FAIL! Friday turned into a bit of a crazy day, although it was mostly good crazy. I was going to try to fit in a run between the dentist & brunch w/ Junk Miles, but for the first time ever, the dentist didn’t get me in on times, so I just ran out of time!

Saturday: Bike/Weights – FAIL! I did nothing. I am a lazy, lazy monster. I really don’t feel too bad, though.

Sunday: Run – SUCCESS! I met Cilley for a run, and we did five miles on Springwater together, and then I ran 2 more for a total of 7. This is the first time I’ve run more than 5 miles since the marathon, so I feel pretty positive about that. I still have my cough, but didn’t really have any trouble at all until after the run, so I know that once this stupid cough is gone, I’ll be able to comfortably rack up the miles again.

Training Goals – 12/21 – 12/27

Monday: weights after work FOR REAL! I haven’t lifted in 2 weeks, and surprisingly, I really miss it.

Tuesday: Terwilliger run (on my own..*sniff*)

Wednesday: bike to work (and back)

Thursday: run + weights

Friday: Christmas Day run

Saturday: bike + weights

Sunday: run – 8 miles

As you can see, no rest days schedule this week. I know that I will probably take one at some point, because I’m lazy, but I’m ready to get back into a more rigorous training schedule, and would like to get back into that habit before the work/school stress starts ramping up again. Also, I only work Monday-Wednesday this week and Tuesday-Thursday next, so it’s a good time to fit in some extra workouts.

I hope everyone has a good Solstice and/or Christmas!
