2009:

They Weren’t Serial Killers!

I know I left you all hanging for a long time, but I’m not dead, although there have been points today when I wished I was.

I had a great five mile run last night. The strangers were nice, and most of them weren’t even all that strange.

I came home, had a good dinner, went to bed with the intention of getting up this morning and going to spin class. I woke up this morning, and was hacking up a lung, so I skipped spin, took a shower & got dressed for work. As I was drinking my pre-work coffee, I started hacking again. It was so painful! Except for this stupid hacking cough that makes my chest ache, I feel fine, so this is mostly super annoying.

I am back in my pj’s, and have now 1) caught up on Castle; 2) watched all of this week’s Daily Shows & Colbert Reports; and am now 3) watching some BSG.

I just feel lame calling in sick for work, since I don’t feel that bad after all. BUT, I guess it’s better now than next month when I’m swamped again. It’s a good time to be away from the office, and I should probably just be glad that I can take off without any major problems when needed, right?

I Think I’m Ready

for 2009 to be over.

The only thing that makes me want to hold onto this year with a white-knuckled grip is the fact that, for the first time in FOREVER, I have nothing to do.

Work is sloooooooooooooooooooowwww.

School is on break.

I have no races until March.

The only problem is that I have translated all this free time into “license to eat my weight in cookies every night.” Which unfortunately means that by the end of this year, I will be consuming a metric ton in cookies every night, and then I will be confined to my bed and need a crane to get me outside.

So, tonight I’m going running with some strangers. Because that will a) get me running and b) delay the cookie feast for a couple of hours.

However, I am afraid of strangers. So it’s a good thing that I have cookies with me RIGHT NOW (thanks, A!) so that I can stress eat in anticipation.

It seems unlikely that a running group with a well-established schedule of running at the same time & place every Wednesday evening will turn out to be a group of homicidal chainsaw-wielding maniacs, but if you don’t hear from me tomorrow, that means that the run is just a clever ruse to lure in unsuspecting victims through the promise of running and tots.

Wish me luck!

Brew Review #12

This is probably some kind of record.

Brew Review #12 at Max’s Fanno Creek in Tigard took placeon 12/11/09. Today, it is 12/15/09. That is only FOUR DAYS people! I probably deserve a sticker! (Or a beer.)

As December 11th progressed, I kept getting cancellation after cancellation – it seemed that many people had other people they preferred to hang out with…I won’t lie internets, I cried a little.

The architect & I took off for the long trek to Tigard just in time to get on I-5 and sit. And sit. And inch forward. And sit. I had to pretend I was back in LA & draw my mantle of 405 Zen driving around me to survive. By then, we were running almost 30 minutes late, and I knew that a brand-new reviewer was waiting for me! And that makes me so stressed out. Also, I hate driving at dusk. So, by the time we got there, I really needed a beer!

Fortunately, new reviewer Cilley was still waiting & hadn’t run off in a huff!

We grabbed a table & I immediately ordered the sampler tray (as is my custom).

Strangely enough, I did not take a picture of the actual samples, just the sampler map

There was a 7th beer served – the vanilla cream porter.

  1. Dry Hop Red
    • Amy: Not the best red, although it’s a decent hoppy/malty combo
    • Architect: Pretty good
  2. Scottish
    • Kind of strange (reaction from both)
  3. IPA
    • Amy: Very hoppy, can’t really stand up to other Portland IPAs, though
  4. Reverend’s Daughter
    • Amy: Kind of hoppy, IPA Junior
    • Cilley: Delicious!
    • Architect: I have always loved the daughters of reverend’s, specifically my lovely wife, the gazelle, and expected this to be no different (that is an exact quote, I promise).
  5. Nit Wit
    • Architect: very good
    • Amy: damn good for a Wit
    • Ashley: “Crisp with a light wheat deliciousness”
  6. Baltic Porter
    • Average example of a porter
  7. Vanilla Cream Stout
    • Amy: Sweet, delicious
    • Cilley: not super beery at all

Food -

  1. The architect had the grilled Mahi mahi – and thought it was “eh”
  2. I had the chicken burrito, and although it wasn’t bad, the rice wasn’t cooked all the way through, and was a wee bit crunch – also “eh”
  3. Cilley had the seafood chowder, which she pronounced “delicious” and some fried evil mushrooms, which apparently were also pretty good.
  4. Ashley had a chicken quesadilla which was pretty good (I did try some of that).

The hoppy hour food specials weren’t that impressive, and I think everyone ordered off the dinner menu. There were also  hoppy hour beer specials, and that was a nice discount on their pints.

So – the overall verdict: great lighter beers, average darker beers. The Reverend’s Daughter & Nit Wit were both great beers, and I may be making a trip back there at some point for another!

The food was okay, but not worth a special trip in & of itself.

The atmosphere….I really didn’t get much further in that the front of the pub (except for a bathroom trip), but the service was pretty good & very friendly.

I give it 3.5 stars, although I give the two better beers 4.37 stars each.

As always – let me know if you’ll be showing up! I’ll plan on showing up around 4:30 (barring traffic difficulties, of course).  Hope to see you there!

Training goals – week of fail

Training Goals: 12/7 – 12/13

Monday: walk with the architect; lift weights – SUCCESS!

Tuesday: run Terwilliger after work – SUCCESS!

Wednesday: Bike to work, freeze my ass off; weights after work – FAIL! It was too cold for biking (I am a pansy) & after work, I had too much to do on my paper.

Thursday: rest day -SUCCESS!

Friday: run (I’m getting crazy & going for a six miler) – FAIL! I worked on my paper all day, and then it was time to go to brew review.

Saturday: bike ride; weights – half SUCCESS! I got on our new fancy trainer & did that for about 20 minutes, which is all I could do before dying. It’s a much harder workout than my usual wandering about fairly slowly bike rides.

Sunday: Ho Ho 5K – FAIL! I started to feel a bit off Saturday, and decided that racing in the cold with a chest cold was not the best idea ever. I kinda wish I’d gone, but at the same time, I am still not feeling right today. What mostly sucks is that I only worked out three days last week, and now I’m pretty sure I’m not going to hit my 800 mile goal for 2009. BUT – I am working on being okay with that. I’ve already more than surpassed my 2008 mileage, and I’m sure I’ll get there next year (in fact, I’m thinking next year, I’ll get pretty close to 1,000). SO, I’m okay with it, really!

Training Goals – 12/14 – 12/20

Monday: post-work weights

Tuesday: Terwilliger run with the Ambitious One

Wednesday: Run

Thursday: rest

Friday: Run

Saturday: Bike/Weights

Sunday: Run

Anyone want to join me for the weekend (Friday-Sunday) activities? I’d be open to switching things around if that would work for everyone.

I’m off school now (and although this class destroyed all dreams of a 4.0 through grad school, I did do much better than expected on my final paper) and have a lot more free time! And energy! And cheerfulness! Woo!

A new way to celebrate

I have decided that I will end every stressful class in a new way! So far, I’m two for two.

Although my immediate celebrate involved some Reverend’s Daughter (just as good as it sounds), the 12th brew review, and a new running-blogger friend, the extended weekend celebration has involved a sore throat, some excess sleeping, and a cough that makes my chest ache.

I’m not in super bad shape – I actually feel MOSTLY okay, but decided to nix all outdoor running & racing plans. I hit the (new) bike trainer for a bit yesterday, and will wander over to the gym later today for some weights & a couple of miles on the dreadmill, but mostly, I’m going to drink lots of Emergen-C, wash my hands frequently, and make cookies.

I really don’t want to be sick this week – I have a lot of great runs planned.

And – Cilley! I hope you have a great 5K today! WOO!
