February, 2010:

Stuff I want: happy birthday to me (part 4): I’ll tell you what I want, what I really really want

So – I have been shamelessly asking for stuff I want. I don’t know yet if it has yielded any fruit other than a significant increase in spam.

But let me tell you what would really make my day.

My birthday is next Wednesday – 2/24. What I really want? Is someone to do a trail run with me & then have brunch & bloody marys after.

It’s true that I like stuff. (And if you want to buy me stuff, I wouldn’t say no. You can go here, or here, or here or even here for ideas.)

But what I’d like most of all? Is a running buddy for 8ish muddy, muddy miles. And perhaps a little bloody mary at Stepping Stone after.

Anyone feel like taking a mental health day Wednesday?

A Tale of Two…Three…Five Blisters

They were the best of feet, they were the worst of feet, it was the age of smart training, it was the age of stupid training, it was the epoch of bandaids, it was the epoch of Neosporin….this is super hard to continue with, blah blah – season of blood  blisters, season of long runs, spring of hope winter of despair, my feet freaking hurt, etc., etc.

When I first started this post, it was only a tale of two blisters. Since then (i.e. Saturday), the number of blisters has multiplied.

Blister #1 is the blister that nearly ruined my (running) life in 2008. Blisters 2-5 are the blisters that have mysteriously appeared on my poor sad toes over the last 11 days.

2008 was a strange year for me. I ran my first half marathon (yay!) and started training for my first marathon. But it turned into the year of injuries.

I fell off a crate & screwed up my knee.

I pulled my hamstring on a trail run when the screwed up knee did a bad weird non-knee thing.

But first – there was the blister.

I used to be part of a women’s workout group. The group met three times/week, and I paid to go twice a week. It was a pretty good group. First of all, I was one of the fastest women there – which, if you look at my race times in the sidebar, you know it’s pretty odd. Secondly, we did a lot of cool workouts – not just running, but yoga, pilates, plyometrics, stairs, trail running, hill running, speed work, etc. BUT, working out with that group made me push myself too hard. I was paying to be there, and I wasn’t going to NOT get my moneys worth.

So – one time, on a hill run through the NW neighborhoods, I got a blister. The blister grew & grew. I was over 3 miles from my car. I was part of the ‘lead’ group, which meant that I was doing the longest, fastest distance.

As the blister grew, I could tell that the pain was affecting my gait. So I slowed to a walk. And was gently mocked (honestly – if at this point, someone gently mocked me for walking off a big-ass blister, I’d just laugh & ignore them – I know myself so much better now). So – I ran the last three miles. By the time I got back to my car, I was limp-running. And my knee hurt.

My knee never really recovered, and I’m pretty sure that was the beginning of my summer of knee-problems, which lead, inevitably, to my fall of knee-hab.

So – last Sunday, when blister #1 was so awful & painful that I had to wear the flip-flops in PUBLIC, I knew it was bad. The next day, I couldn’t even get a pair of high heels on! I had to wear my running shoes to work. But I knew it would be fine by Tuesday. Tuesday – I still couldn’t wear anything but my Sauconys, and even that was painful.

So I skipped my run. And although that led to a big FAIL on my training schedule, I have no doubt that I made the right choice.

Currently I have 1 mysterious blood blister on the 4th toe of my left foot, 2 mysterious blood blisters on the 4th toe of my right foot, and 1 blister on each arch. This is not an auspicious beginning to marathon training – but at least I know myself well enough at this point to know when to take it easy & not screw up the remaining 11 weeks of training, right?

It is a far, far better training than I have ever done, it is a far, far faster marathon that I go to than I have ever run.

(I’d apologize to Darwin Dickens [my cat, Darwin, was helping me type this, but as far as I know he didn't actually write "A Tale of Two Cities], but I was never a big fan to begin with, so he can bite me.)

Training Goals – 2/15/10 – 2/21/10

The recap! This week sucked – both in terms of work (SUCK!) and food (I existed on nothing but pizza & nachos & beer for 36 hours) and workouts (there is a lot of fail down there).

Training Goals – 2/8 – 2/14

Monday: weights – FAIL! I was lazy.

Tuesday: Terwilliger run (4.2 miles) – FAIL! I had a blister that made  my toe twice as big as usual (it was so bad that I wore flip-flops to a baby shower, and many of you know how I feel about wearing flip flops in public), and it hurt to walk – so I did nothing. Actually – that’s not true. I had a glass of wine. That’s almost the same as running, right?

Wednesday: Waterfront run (4-5 miles)- half FAIL! I did run, but only 2.5 miles (although it was a speedy-ish 2.5 miles).

Thursday: Rest – SUCCESS! Unfortunately.

Friday: Trail run (7-8 miles) + Swim – SUCCESS (more or less). I did run – 7.75 miles on the trails; and I lifted weights. There was no swimming, though :(

Saturday: Weights + Bike – half SUCCESS! I didn’t lift, since I had the day before, but I did get on the trainer for a 6.6 mile ride in 30 minutes (.7  miles further than my last 30 minute trainer ride! woo!)

Sunday: Long run (12 miles) – SUCCESS! I ran 12 miles with the Ambitious One (thanks for meeting me), and although I wasn’t quite as fast as I’d planned (I was going for 11 – 11:10 pace, and ended up with 11:25 pace), I am just happy it’s over. I have 3 blood blisters on 2 toes, and my feet are ANGRY!

My goal – 4 runs; 2 weights; 1 swim; 1 bike; stretch after every run; foam roll Tuesday/Friday/Sunday -

Well, I got 3 runs, 1 weights, 0 swims, 1 bike. so – SUCK! I missed three planned workouts. I did stretch after every run, but didn’t foam roll at all. BOO!

Goals – 2/15 – 2/21

Monday: weights + trainer (no work tomorrow, so I should hit this!)

Tuesday: Terwilliger run (4.2 miles w/ the Ambitious One)

Wednesday: swim + track workout

Thursday: rest

Friday: run and/or weights – I hope. It’s the last day of my current class, and might be intense. If nothing, else, I hope I can get a trainer ride in.

Saturday: hmmm….not sure what’s going to happen here. I’m volunteering out at Hagg Lake, and am planning on bringing my bike for a ride if I have time. Not sure though.

Sunday: long run – 13 miles.

Goal: 3 runs, 2 weights, 1 swim, 1 bike

Stuff I want: happy birthday to me: part 3 (home & garden)

1. Oven-safe skillet. At least once every couple of weeks, I curse at all my skillets because they are not oven safe. I know it’s not technically their fault, since I am the one who purchased them, not realizing that I NEEDED to put them in the oven – but last night’s frittata would’ve been so much better if I could’ve finished it in the oven. (Also, using less cheese and having the right number of eggs might have helped a bit, too.)

2. Kitchen Aid mixer. You have no idea how much I want one of these. SO PRETTY! So handy! And did I mention pretty? I am torn between wanting the red one (pretty!) or the persimmon one (would match my walls!) or the black one (would match the rest of my appliances). If only it were just the color choice that was holding me back….alas, some of my hesitation is the price.

3. Electric griddle. I need this! For important pancake and lefse making events! Ooooh – and tortillas!

4. Food mill. No, seriously! Last fall, I was saddened on so many occasions that I did not have one of these. Essential, really, for the serious canner! Great for apple sauces and marinara sauces! YUM!

5. Food scale. I used to have a food scale, and it was a wonderful thing. But then, it died a sad, sad death and I haven’t yet replaced it.

6. Spice rack! I am not entirely certain why this item gets an exclamation point, but it does! Right now my spices are all jumbled up in a cupboard, and you can’t see more than a couple of jars at the same time. This is so elegant! and handy!

7. Wireless weather station. I love stuff like this! And since I no longer have the Weather Channel (and by no longer, I mean I haven’t had cable since college except for a brief 9 month period when we lived in an apartment with cable included), I need this! And look: a little man tells me how to dress for the weather! Perfect!

8. Electric tiller. My garden grows every year, and it is hard to cultivate all that dirt with my hoe! (Although I got a fantastic new hoe for Christmas, which should make that somewhat easier!) This is expensive, but would be used a LOT.

8. Germination Station. This year, I want to grow my own tomatoes & peppers from seeds (usually I buy starts), and think this would help me out immensely! Also, it’s cute :)

10. Greenhouse. I covet this! So, if you have an extra $550 to spend & really, really wanted to buy me something, I would love it if you’d get me one of these. I would love to have it available all winter for greens! And maybe even tomatoes! I would share my produce with you.

So – only one more installment of shameless begging for presents, most of which are super expensive, which is why I haven’t bought them for myself yet.

My birthday is in 15 days, so there’s still plenty of shopping & shipping time left!

The Return of PORN!

You guys, last Friday I went to see my sports massage guy and we had a little talk about shoes. And the beginnings of that plantar fasciitis that I’m starting to feel.

He perhaps implied that I didn’t need to wear heels all the time.

I perhaps implied that he was an idiot.

He wanted to know how high my heels really were.

I said something about the vicinity of 3-4 inches.

He passed out & hit his head & is now suing me for causing his PTSD.

Before he filed the lawsuit, he perhaps said something about how PR-ing my next marathon might be difficult if my feet hurt all the time.

I said FINE and stomped around like a tantrumy three year old.

And now, dear internets, I need your help.

I need to buy a couple of pairs of shoes. And by shoes, I mean shoes that will not elongate my sad stumpy legs. Shoes that will cause the legs of all my pants to drag on the ground. Shoes that are FLAT!

I find myself in new territory – buying flat dress shoes, but I know someone out there must have advice (advice that isn’t ‘welcome to Dansko territory *SARAH*).

So – here are the offerings.
