The Next Big Thing – Happy Christmas PBRs!

It seems like everywhere I look, people are talking about their 2010 race schedules.

There are marathons, half marathons, triathlons & half-irons being registered for. I’ll admit, I fall victim to this myself, asking every runner I’ve run with in the past couple of weeks, “what’s your next race?”

The next race that I currently have on my schedule (in case you were curious), is the Shamrock run (I’m doing the 15K distance) on March 14.

That is not, however, the next big thing.

This is:

I am officially registered for this race. This is going to be a very different experience from marathon #1, in no small part because half of the runners I know in Portland are running it, too! And there are even some people doing the half!

So, since we’ll all be training about the same time, and doing approximately similar mileages, I’m guessing there will be some post-run brunches in our future.

To that end, I picked up a copy of this to share with my hungry PBRs:

I am pretty excited to dig in (both to the book AND into breakfast). I am also terrified excited about having just signed up for my SECOND marathon (in 4 months, 1 week & 3 days; EEK!).

Other races that I am thinking about doing probably going to do in 2010:

The 2010 (potential) Race Schedule

  • 3/14/10 – Shamrock 15K
  • 4/11/10 – Race for the Roses Half Marathon
  • 4/18/10 – Bridge to Brews 10K
  • 5/2/10 – Eugene Marathon
  • 6/13/10 – Blue Lake Sprint Triathlon
  • 8/1/10 – Midsummer Olympic Triathlon (at Blue Lake)
  • 8/14/10 – XTerra Portland Triathlon (at Hagg Lake)
  • 9/5/10 – Eugene Women’s Half
  • 10/24/10 – Run Like Hell 5K
  • 11/14/10 – Outer Banks Half Marathon

As you can see, I’m planning three half marathons, only (ha!) one full marathon, and three triathlons. With the three shorter distance races, I’m at 10 races for 2010, which seems like a great number! I haven’t locked in everything yet, although I feel pretty confident that the first four will happen, and I know I want to do at least two triathlons this year.

So, internets…what races are YOU doing in 2010?

Brew Review #11 – The Mash Tun Brewpub

A couple of weeks ago (November 13, to be exact) the architect & I, as well as a few brew review loyalists, descended on The Mash Tun Brewpub on NE Alberta for Brew Review #11.

The architect & I were the first to arrive (we almost always are, due to the fact that neither of us work on Fridays & I like to get there early to secure seating).

We ordered a sampler tray (of course) and when I pulled my camera out to photograph the three beers that came in the sampler, I realized that the inconceivable (I do not think that means what you think it means) had happened. My camera battery was DEAD! We both tried to take photos with our cell cameras, but it was too dark, and they did not turn out at all.

So – no pictures of the sampler.

BUT – I do have comments (I took notes like a fancy person).

1. Cream of WheatArchitect: It was different & tasted like a summer beer; Gazelle: .It was both creamy & wheaty. Not bad for a wheat. I would actually consider ordering one if it were not November; Lisa: Should’ve come with a slice of orange; The Ambitious One: yummy.

2. ESB – Gazelle: not offensive; Architect: wishy-washy, nothing really there; Mr. Pi: Really sweet, good.

3. StoutGazelle: I like it, but it’s really rich; Andrew: solid effort, drinkable but not unique.

Their fourth beer, which not only was not on the sampler menu, but also not offered at a happy hour special AND not served in pint glasses (all three of which sucked, I thought – other places have their higher ABV beers on sampler trays or on special) was the Black & Gold IPA. (FYI – the ABV was 8.2%) Architect: yummy. Gazelle: yum. And with that glowing review, you can tell that we liked that one!

I ordered a pint glass of the IPA (even though it wasn’t on special and cost $4 for a GLASS) & the architect got the Cream of Wheat. At that point, our friends began arriving.

They ordered beers, we all ordered food.

The food – it was good. The architect & I had nachos (delicious, but the happy hour special was not quite enough for two hungry monkeys). The architect ordered chicken strips & fries (I think) and I had the happy hour cheeseburger & fries. The fries were delicious! With perfection! And great seasoning. There were many fry fans created that night.

Also in my notes, I have recorded the following

1. Sarah is the awesomest (possibly because she had a camera that was used to capture the images below)

2. When asked for her reaction to the beers (Sarah had a Ninkasi Sleigh’r; as did I; and as always, it was delicious – I’ve never had a bad Ninkasi beer & can’t wait for a traveling brew review to Ninkasi in Eugene), Sarah said: I just wish I’d drank more.

3. The only person who did not have any beer reactions was Michael, and since he had Hamm’s, he may be banned for life from brew reviews (just kidding! you can come back! I am not a TOTAL beer snob).

And now for the pictures (courtesy of Sarah!):

And – for the announcement you’ve all been waiting for!

Brew Review #12 is scheduled for December 11 at Max’s Fanno Creek Brew Pub.

12562 SW Main St
Tigard, Oregon 97223

Hoppy Hour: 3 – 6

As per usual, I will plan to arrive at about 4:30. It would be helpful if you’d let me know whether to expect you, so I can make sure to secure enough seating.

Also – fair warning. That is the last day of my current (ass-kicking) class, so I will be relieved. Muchly.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Because every once in awhile, I can manage a nice post where I’m not bitching about people at the gym, or grad school, or whatever – I want to tell you the things that I am thankful for today.

1. My PBRs. Seriously – the best group of friends a runner (or anyone, really) could have. Love you all: Alisa, Mr. Pi, Sarah, Zach, IronJen, Emily, Cindy & Erika. (Also, as Sarah & I noted this morning, it is our one year anniversary of knowing Emily! YAY!)

2. My kick-ass neighbors. You guys are super awesome, and honestly, I can’t imagine better people living next door. Unless they were, Johnny Depp, or a suddenly 18-year-old Taylor Lautner or something.

3. My knitting girls. None of whom have blogs, so I can’t link to them. Dammit! You guys make knitting (and drinking wine & eating cheese) so much fun.

4. Beer. And Portland. And the beer in Portland.

5. Running. Such a huge part of my life – it’s definitely made my life more enjoyable AND has helped me meet a lot of cool people (see #1 above).

6. Books. I love to read – and I am currently only about 4 books away from reaching my 52 new books for the year goal. I will definitely make it. Also, I love the library, which is keeping me from going broke while reading a book a week.

7. All of you. You guys are awesome. Thanks for stopping by & commenting & making me feel that we live in such a great world.

8. Cats. I love my little monsters, and can’t imagine life without waking up with no covers because the cats were apparently cold.

9. Family – especially the family members that loaned me a table & chairs so I could accommodate the 14 people that will be showing up today!

10. The architect. He is the best, most amazing husband who has ever lived and I feel lucky to have him. He is so supportive of whatever I decide to do (marathons! triathlons! grad school!) and hardly ever never complains when I’m being ridiculous. Life would not be nearly as good without him (love you!).

I hope that you are all having a happy Thanksgiving (or, you know, if you’re not from the US – a GREAT Thursday) surrounded by those you love. I know I am!

You were worried, weren’t you?

You thought I’d died at spin class. But I didn’t! Because (and I am so ashamed to admit this internets), I didn’t go.

BUT – I have an excellent excuse reason.

That muscle in my leg that’s been bothering me got worse all day, and I didn’t want to exacerbate it. I am in the off season. I do not need to push through anything. So, I rested. And today, I rested as well. Tomorrow, if it feels okay when I wake up, I am going to a make up spin class. And probably won’t die.

Also – just want to start the happy thoughts train for all the racers this weekend!  The Ambitious One is doing a half mary tomorrow. Susan (the nurse on the run!) is doing a marathon this weekend. BUT most especially – I want to give a major shout out to Jen – who is doing the Arizona Ironman on Sunday. I cannot WAIT to cyber stalk her & hear all about it. The only thing I know for sure is that she is going to ROCK that thing.

This is the week that never ends

It just goes on & on & on & on, etc.

Everyone I talked to yesterday agreed that it was a very odd Wednesday – almost a Monday-ish Wednesday. Don’t know why – but it’s over. And now, it’s Thursday! Which makes me happy. Except for one very small problem.

Tonight is the night I am supposed to spin. I know you all said I would be fine and probably wouldn’t die. And also, I ran a marathon and didn’t die, so one 60 minute spin class should not scare me. I am a big, brave dog & all that.

But I am scared.

(Aside: that weird muscle in my leg that I pulled back in August is really sore today [and yesterday, too]. Since I ran Tuesday for the first time in two weeks, I’m guessing that’s what made it sore, but I don’t understand. It hurts immediately upon standing after sitting for a bit, and is sore while walking, but gets less sore the more that I move.  I have a sports massage appointment next Wednesday – hopefully I can figure out what’s going on & get that taken care of.)

However, I am trying to beat down my own fear. My friend & fellow PBR Jen is en route RIGHT NOW to Arizona, where she will become an Iron wo(Man) on Sunday. In case you’re not familiar with that because you’re one of the people who has arrived here by looking for “flat suede boot porn pictures that update every 20 minutes” (WTF? Seriously?), that is a very long 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike & a marathon (i.e. 26.2 miles) ALL IN A ROW.  So – if Jen can do that (and I know she can), then surely I can survive a spin class, right?

If I don’t post tomorrow, my above assumption turned out to be false, and I am dead.  Otherwise, I’ll let you know how it went.
