Three (3!) Things Thursday

1. The other day, I went down to the freezer to get a pizza for dinner (I am all about lazy cooking now that I’ve started my final project for my Master’s). I opened it up and something wasn’t right. I picked up a package of ground beef to move it, and my fingers squished right in. And blood spurted right out. The freezer was not on! We have no idea HOW it became unplugged, and how long it was in that state. Neither of us had accessed the freezer for a few days. All the stuff on top was thawed out and drippy (including my planned pizza). So much meat that had to be tossed. BUT – everything in the bottom half of the freezer was still frozen solid, including a couple chickens, a bunch of Colin, and all my raw milk. I was really sad, though.

2. For my final project, I had to turn in a work schedule. And, because I am insane, I already mostly had one. The next 7 weeks of my life are fully scheduled. I do have “leisure time” built in, but it is pretty ridiculous. My first real assignment is due tonight, and involves “picking a topic.” A few months ago, I knew exactly what my topic was – and that topic is still pretty interesting to me. However, with all the recent job changes, that topic is no longer relevant to my current career, and I am wondering if I should change the topic. Unfortunately, that’s where my wondering stops – it does not go on to wonder if I should change my topic to “very specific topic on which I could find several excellent references in just an hour of searching, but not something that’s been done to death.” Unfortunate, right?

3. As you may remember, I totally agonized over what I was going to be for Halloween. I’m pregnant enough that none my original costume choices fit, but not so pregnant that I could be a “pregnant” anything & get away with it. The architect had a monk constume left over from years ago (actually, that’s what he was wearing the first Halloween we were dating, 9 years ago – we didn’t spend the holiday together, but I did stop by to see him on my way home from work before heading out to Scary-oke at the Whaler in Venice with my at-the-time roomie Dr. M.). So – I headed to a costume shop and picked up a nun costume. I did have to stuff my costume to make it funnier – but I think it worked:

Happy Thursday!

Gratitude Journal

November 3, 2011: I am grateful that I have a good job that is challenging & interesting, if not necessarily catering to my life interests. I have the opportunity for professional development (weekly leadership seminar today!), have a decent salary, good health insurance, and a bunch of people who are excited for my pregnancy and not at all worried about my maternity leave (in fact, they’ve told me to not even THINK about being available in May – i.e. budget season – and that they’d get through it without me, as long as I do all the prep work before I leave…)

November 2, 2011: I am grateful for the architect, who is simply wonderful. He picks up the household slack when I’m busy with schoolwork, brings me chicken fingers on his way home from work, and is simply the most wonderful husband I could ask for…

November 1, 2011:  I am grateful for my (so far, knock on wood) easy and wonderful pregnancy

Happy Hallowe’en!

And Happy Samhain, too – if you celebrate such things.

And, most importantly, Happy Anniversary to me! (And the architect, obvs.)  We’ve been married five years today.

We had a GREAT Spooktacular this weekend, but alas! I have no photos to share. I didn’t take ANY of people (people who were there, please send me pics) and totally forgot to download the decorations and food pics that I did take.

I drank my weight in delightful green punch, that I kind of want to drink every day (even though that amount of sugar totally makes Alvie a hyper monkey) and believe everyone had a good time.

The architect & I celebrated our anniversary yesterday by lazing about. We exchanged gifts in early afternoon.  (And I didn’t take pictures of these, either.)

I got him an X-box 360/kinect (found an awesome deal on a refurbished one) as well as Halo 3 (he loves those Halo games) and he got me a CHAINSAW! I have my very own chainsaw! And then, it rained all afternoon so I could not go out and terrorize the neighborhood evil hedge. SAD!

You guys – I am seriously so stoked about my chainsaw. I have been wanting one for ages! I can’t believe  I am a chainsaw owner now! (Especially since I’ve had stitches twice from accidents involving 1) a small paring knife and 2) and electric meat slicer.) BUT a new accident-free, tree cutting down era is about to begin!

(Also, the Xbox is cool, too.)

ANYWAYS – Happy 5th anniversary, Mr. Architect and giver of the most awesome gift ever.

Ummm – apparently I don’t have any photos of year 1 OR the architect & I together at last year’s spooktacular! WTF, Amy?!?

ANYWAYS – I will soon post a link to my hallowe’en party photos, and then if you want, you can totally enjoy. Or not. Whatever.

Other big news today – I have my next ultrasound scheduled, so next week (Tuesday!), we will find out the sex of baby Alvie Bean! Bets? My money’s on boy, but either way, it will be awesome.

Watch out for zombies, witches, and sugar comas tonight!

Hard to believe….

Yesterday marked nine years since I met the architect. Nine. From the day we met, I knew he was something special. The end of the month will mark five years of marriage.

I can still remember, towards the end(ish) of our first date, walking out on the Venice (CA) pier in the fog and knowing that this was going to be an interesting trip.

At that time, a year seemed like forever, and nine years unthinkable (I had a very strict 2-month expiration date on all relationships at that time), but something about him kept me breaking all my rules.

We’ve had ups & downs, like any couple, but in that nine years, it’s always been him.

The next nine years are going to be epic.

Welcome to my bathroom renovation blog!

Seriously – do I even talk about anything else anymore?

It was a long-feeling weekend, which was just what I needed.  Friday I took some “me-time” and went to Nordstroms, armed with $40 in Nordstrom Notes. I bought some essentials (read: new bras! new running tights!) and some super-duper essentials (read: boots….beautiful, beautiful boots).

By Friday night, I was wiped out from all the shopping activities!  It was determined earlier that the tile would not be reading for grouting on Friday, so unfortunately, I was unable to help out with that. (And, of course, by unfortunately, I mean, “Yay!”)

Saturday morning, I met my friend Sarah for a run, and we had a lovely September misty day run followed by the farmer’s market.  When I returned home, the architect was hard at work grouting. I did homework and periodically changed his rinsing buckets. By the end of the day, it looked fantastico!

That floor looks so nice!  YAY!

By the time he was done, he looked a little like a coal miner – covered in black, sooty-looking powder.  So, I made us dinner (roasted chicken, rice, and fresh tomatoes) and dessert (pear crisp with ice cream), and we chilled out. (If, by chilled out, you mean we both fell asleep on the couch by 10.)

Sunday was a bit of a lazier morning.  For me. I got up, got dressed, and then while I headed out to brunch to celebrate my friend Lisa’s birthday, the architect headed to the hardware store for more supplies!

When I got home, he was hard at work (again!), but finally I was able to help. I primed the bathroom walls and painted our new wainscoting.

IMAG0580This picture (above) is almost exactly the same angle as picture #1 in my last post.  Improvement, no?

Inspector's Visit

The wainscoting and baseboards will go on tonight, and then all the critical path tasks to getting the toilet hooked up again will be done! Yay!

We will likely paint and start the built in shelving this week, too, so that by Friday evening, when the in-laws arrive, we can hang a shower curtain and pretend the bathroom is done! :)

And then soon (I hope!) this will no longer be a bathroom renovation blog.  And I can talk about other, more important things. Like fancy dinner parties. And Hallowe’en! (I love Hallowe’en!)

Happy week!

South Dakota Trip – recap!

I’ve been home for almost a week now, have finally downloaded the SD pics from my camera & phone, and thought it was high time I regaled you with all the excitement! I already touched briefly on the first part of the trip. I spent Sunday night – Friday morning with my parents in Rapid City (for the uninitiated, that’s in the Black Hills, home of Mt. Rushmore & other exciting things).

Wednesday evening, I borrowed my mom’s car (like a teenager! cool!) and went to visit my friend Steph and her family. Stephanie & I went to college together and hung out a wee bit during that time. She is made of awesome sauce, and I am so glad that she lives near my parents, because that means every time I go visit them, I get to see her, her very cool husband, and her two fantastic kiddos (who are somehow starting 3rd grade & kindergarten today – not sure how that happened).

We had a great dinner (garden fresh! a woman after my own heart!), a lovely post-dinner walk, and then Legos! and Lego star wars! (Lego me is a faceless robber, in case you were wondering). We had so much fun that we forgot to take any pictures. :( So, I made Steph come to my parents’ house the next day for a photo shoot, because it would be a crime to NOT have a picture of the this much awesomeness in existence:

This is obviously before my sudden growth spurt….

Thursday was pretty low key. I worked on homework, went to the farmers’ market with my mom, and made a rental car reservation. Friday morning, I was up bright & early to get ready for my long drive. But first, of course, pictures!

DSC00279

After the photoshoot (we just asked one of the papparazzi standing about, obvs), Mom drove me to the airport to pick up my car. I had a brief moment of panic at the rental car counter when I couldn’t find my license or debit card – I hadn’t used them all week. For a moment I was afraid I’d left them at home, then common sense prevailed – there’s no way I could’ve boarded the plane w/o my license! – and I checked the zipper pocket of my carry on and found them.

I got in my sweet Ford Fusion (ha!) and headed out. I like western South Dakota, but it can be a bit desolate. If I hadn’t been worried about time, I would’ve taken the Badlands loop, but I didn’t want to get to Sioux Falls and be rushing to pick up the architect at the airport!

Rest stop view

I stopped 3 times on my way across the state, and after my first stop (in Kadoka, SD), I discovered that my car had satellite radio! YAY! I listened to a 90s station in preparation for seeing my two other college besties!

I’d been craving Taco Johns since Wednesday night (mmmmm….Taco Bravo & potato oles with nacho cheese), so when I stopped for lunch in Chamberlain, that’s what I got. So nasty. So disgusting. So good.

Chamberlain is right on the Missouri River, and if I’d cared, I could’ve gotten some awesome shots of the river. However, I didn’t care, so you will have to use your imagination:

After that, I drove the rest of the way to Sioux Falls, only stopping once to talk on the phone. (Sure, I can drive 80 mph and talk on the phone at the same time – after all the road’s pretty straight, but I decided that it might be a bit safer to just pull into a rest stop.)

Finally, after driving all day, I got to my hotel, and bestie #1 (Sara & I lived together for two years - practically 3) came to my hotel room! YAY! My phone kept making noises, which apparently sounded like pictures, so there was a “why are you taking pictures of my feet” joke. Obviously, what came next is no surprise:

IMAG0527-1-1

After an hour or so, she had to head home and I had to head to the airport to pick up the architect! YAY! I hadn’t seen him for over 5 days, and I was pretty excited.

We headed back to the hotel & chilled for approximately 10 minutes before heading downtown to meet Sara, her bf, and bestie #2 (my roommate from my senior year in college & 3 years in LA, Marcy) and her husband for sushi! I was a bit nervous about sushi in one of the most landlocked places you can actually find in the US, but it was pretty good. :)

***Saturday***

Saturday morning, I finished up my homework, and then headed over to Marcy’s to meet her and Sara for our day of fun! The architect dropped me off & headed out for his own day of fun (taking pictures of old downtown Sioux Falls, and relaxing at the hotel).

I got an excellent surprise when, in addition to Sara, Sara’s MOM also showed up. She is one of my favorite moms of all time (next to my own, of course), and we went out for a lovely ladies’ lunch, and then, to the mall. As we were leaving the mall so I could go back to my hotel, rest a bit, and collect the architect, we ran into my sister! CRAZY!

Saturday evening, we all reconvened at Marcy’s house so her chef husband could make us fantastic fajitas and we could spend the evening watching funny You Tube videos.

All too soon, the evening was over…but not before we got pictures!

I will have to photoshop Steph into one of these pics – she really should’ve been there, right?

ANYWAYS, – SUNDAY!

Sunday, the architect & I headed over to pick up Liz, and then we drove to Madison, home of one of my mother’s brothers and his family. I hadn’t seen them in a while, and we had a lovely lunch. All too soon, it was time to head to Lake Norden to see my maternal grandparents. We spent an hour or so with them before heading back.

DSC00331

On the way back to Sioux Falls, we drove through Arlington – a town I lived in for five years as a wee lass (Liz was born while we lived there) and we drove by the old house.

DSC00333

It looks so much smaller than I remember (from when I was 7). Then, we drove through Brookings (where I went to undergrad) and drove by the two houses I lived in as a Jr and Sr in college. The architect was not impressed with either.  I didn’t get a pic of my senior house, but when I was a Jr, Sara & I lived in an old Victorian that had been divided into three very tiny apartments. Her bedroom was an addition to the house, and had been build where the porch must have been originally. They didn’t take the original window out when they added it, so we had a window between our bedrooms. It was an awesome novelty for the first couple of weeks, and then it was awesome because when she would sleep through her alarm, I could open the window & shut it off!  :)

They are (I hope) restoring it now…I swear it didn’t look like this when we lived there…

IMAG0530

That night, we ordered room service & I fell asleep EARLY.

The next morning, we went out for breakfast, then headed back to the hotel to pack up. We met my sister for lunch, and then the architect  & I went on one last midwestern adventure. We drove to Minnesota so he could check that off the list. After touring the exciting town of Pipestone, we went back to Sioux Falls, handed in the car, and got on the plane home.

And that is the end of my SD Adventure!  If you stuck with it this long, you are probably from South Dakota and were hoping to see more pictures of yourself.

I had a great time on the trip – it was so good to see everyone! There were friends I hadn’t seen since May 2007 and family I hadn’t seen since who knows when!

I was, however, super happy to be home, in my own bed. Next time, however, I’m going to need a vacation day after I get back before going to work. Tuesday was brutal (sorry for my abrupt exit at book club tuesday night, fellow clubbers! So tired!)

Happy week, all!
