Corn Chronicles 2010 – Part Who Knows?

You guys! I have sucked at doing weekly garden posts. And it’s already July 20! This is one crazy ass speedy summer.

But, fortunately for everyone who’s just been DYING to know what my garden looks like – here are some updates!

The corns are getting so big & strong. Most of them are starting to tassel and if you look really closely, you can see baby corns forming. So far the big winners are Quinta, Amy & James corns. (James is making a surprising comeback after last year’s wimpy-ness…do you think my dad is cheating & using divine intervention?) The rest are not far behind, though!

I’ve got some awesome looking beans that are ready for eating:

And my peas are fattening up nicely:

My carrots are coming along (I’ve eaten a couple of them, and they are EXCELLENT!)

It’s nearly time to make some beet pickles…yum.

My lemon tree is doing its best to make me a few lemons. It’s the first year, so I wasn’t expecting any!

The artichokes are so tall…but they are not very artichokey yet….this was an accidental purchase, so I’ve no idea what’s going to happen here.

I have a few viney things growing – some zucchini and pumpkins, and the cucumbers are starting, too!

The hops are taller than me – and grow a few inches every day!

I am concerned about the tomatoes & peppers – they just aren’t as robust as last year. It’s kind of sad!

I was hoping for millions of tomatoes this year, but so far, this is all I have:

The Serrano is trying to make up for all his lazy brothers & sisters:

I do have some beautiful flowers, though!

It’s so much fun to walk around every night & discover something new. The other night, we had pizza made from our blue potatoes, an onion from the garden, homemade cheeses (goat & mozzarella) & pizza crust made from the leftover whey (although I made the cheese & picked the product, the architect & our kick-ass neighbor actually did most of the cooking) . I love being able to make a meal out of what I’ve grown myself! (The other things on the pizza were artichoke hearts & tomatoes, both of which could have come from my garden if it was the end of August, right?)

Corn Chronicles 10-02

You guys! I was going to post weekly updates in June, but it has been so rainy! I saw on the weather last night that it has rained on 14 of 17 days this month. Last year? It rained two of the first 17 days in June. This is ridiculous!

Never-the-less, I did manage to get some good pics last night.

Quinta Corn is the tallest in the garden thus far – she is a whopping 14 inches tall! Amy corn is right behind her, and the underdog, James Corn (who only grew to about 2 feet tall total last year) is already a foot tall! Go James Corn!

Some of the younger corns are feeling a bit jealous that their big brothers and sisters are getting to stay up late and night, but they’re growing quickly, too. I think, despite the wet weather, that the corn is going to be good this year!

A week ago, my corn was V6 corn. Which does not mean that it has a super fast engine and can kick your corn’s ass in a street race. No – it means that it has 6 developed leaf collars and will be delicious in August.  Or something like that. (A friend of mine from college, who is an agronomist, took time out from being a brand new dad to tell me that on Facebook. So thanks, Brad!)

Other things that are awesome:

Bruno the broccoli (for you, Jeep Girl) and friends have already been munched on once – and they are DELICIOUS! I love broccoli.

Tomatoes and peppers are coming along, but I could really use a few sunny hot days for them.

The salad bar is open for business, and that business is yummy. Peas are blooming & podding. Beans are not dead yet! They are actually going to be fine, I think.

The vine stuff is coming on slowly – they would also like a few days of sunshine. The artichokes, however, couldn’t be happier, I don’t think. They are enormous!

My grape plant is looking gorgeous, as are my flowers. My lemon tree is blooming, and I am hoping for a few lemons.

My potatoes are taking over the world!

I love this time of year, when everything starts growing and there are edibles everywhere.

I can’t wait until August, when there will be tomatoes and corn and deliciousness.

PS – What do you think of the new layout?

Corn Chronicles 2010 – #1

Yay! it is time for garden pictures. I know you’re super excited (and by the way, there is still time to get in a naming request for a baby corn).

The corns are still pretty wee (wave #2 hasn’t even poked their heads out of the ground yet). BUT – they are growing (about 2 inches tall) and many are named.

Other things are growing, too! My broccoli (mostly) looks great, the potatoes are taking over the world, and the garlic is huge!

My ‘salad bar’ section is looking awesome! Beans, lettuces, spinaches, radishes, carrots & beets! However, out of the 3 dozen or so pea plants that should have come up, only about 6 appeared. Obviously, I blame the spiders (although not out loud), and have replanted.

My herb garden is FANTASTIC right now! So much mint – it’s almost mojito time :) And my flowers (roses and oriental poppies) are looking great. Soon, the wildflowers will start blooming, too!

This weekend, I am going to put in all my (seven million) tomatoes, tomatillos & peppers. The squash-like things are beginning to sprout, as are my scarlet runner beans. My strawberries are strawberrying, and, most exciting of all, I have 6 cherries! And 6 apples! YAY! (my trees are young, and this is their first fruit.)

General excitement!

You guys! I have great news – next week will mark the return of the corn chronicles. Wave #1 is poking their cute little heads above the ground. I bought name tags for all the corns, so that they will be easily identified. There are 21 corns in wave #1 that need to be named – so feel free to put in your claims now.

I’m not doing an alphabetical order thing this year, so the first 17 will be honored.

There will, of course, be an Amy corn, an architect corn, a James corn (I’m sure James corn will redeem himself this year), and the Ambitious One has already requested a corn – but there are plenty of spots left open. Next week’s photo will have their cute little name tags, so let me know by Wednesday!

Bountiful Harvest – Corn Chronicles Part the End for 2009

Other than the random tomato thief, who has struck at least twice (once in my garden, and once in my kick-ass neighbor’s garden), things have been good from the garden.

The corn children have mostly grown up & gone on to better things (like my belly). We’re starting to get lots of tomatoes. And peppers. The mustard is almost ready to be dried & mustardized. The Brussels sprouts are sprouting. My fall crop is in the ground & sprouting. The tomatillos are looking good – as are the potatoes.

The 24 hours of rain we got earlier this week refilled our empty barrels and made the garden all weedy again.

So – without further ado – the photos!

Life is very busy lately – and this weekend, the architect & I are FINALLY getting out of town for our first camping trip of the year. I am very much looking forward to it.

Also, I seem to have pulled a muscle in my thigh, and it hurts. I think I am going to just yoga today (I took yesterday off completely) and go for my 14 miles tomorrow….gotta take care of the leggies.

I also need to post my last TWO brew reviews, because I just realize I haven’t yet. The next is (tentatively) scheduled for Friday 8/21 at Lucky Lab. Let me know if that would work for you.
