November 2011 Goals

And, of course, the October recap….

October 2011 Goals

  1. Finish the bathroom by 10/29/11. We can do it!  All supplies are purchased! I can paint like a mad woman! And make sandwiches for the architect while he tiles. (I am not allowed to tile due to my propensity to say, “eh, fuck it! That’s good enough!”) I am excellent construction support staff. – FAIL! But we are so very close!  We should be done by Thanksgiving.
  2. Get the rain garden outlined, dug, and partially planted. – FAIL! I have decided to hold off on this project for now.
  3. Finish summer garden/start fall garden. – Partial SUCCESS! The summer garden is done, and the plans are complete for the next phase…just need to execute said plans.
  4. Remove all extraneous computer crap from the house. Like the printer that doesn’t work. And the CRT monitor that weighs 375 lbs. And the 50 (approximate count) PCs (both laptop & desktop) that are just sitting around doing nothing. NOTHING! Except gathering dust. – FAIL! But, there is progress in that we have now determined which things need to go. I just need to wait for an electronics recycling day to happen so I can be all environmentally responsible.
  5. Finish my very last class of my Master’s program with an “A” before starting the final project phase. – SUCCESS! Class is done, A was achieved, terminal project is now in progress
  6. Throw the ass-kicking-est 2nd Annual Halloween bash ever! YAY for Halloween!  We will have a howling good time! – SUCCESS! I think, anyways – I had a good time.

October Training Goals

I have them! My gym membership expires this month, and I will not be renewing it. So, I want to spend more time outdoors. Running, jumping, biking, hiking, etc. I have been slacking on yoga lately, too, and need to make that a regular practice again.

I have definitely been better about working out in October now that I’m not quite as tired.  Not at the level I’d like to be at, but better than September!  Go me!

November 2011 Goals

  1. Survive the first 4.5 weeks of my terminal project without going crazy.
  2. Make lefse! With her! We will have so much fun.
  3. For reals, get the garlic in the ground & build the cloche
  4. Visit the daycare that looked awesome on paper (or, the computer screen, rather) and beg them to take my as-yet-unborn child
  5. List one thing I am thankful for every day (thanks for the inspiration, Alisa!)

November 2011 Training Goals

Since I am pregnant, this is harder than usual, but my goal is to work out a minimum of 3 times/week; 30 minutes/time. I had a decent start last night with a trainer ride, although I wasn’t able to hit 30 minutes due to the extreme discomfort of my bike shorts which apparently are not baby bump accommodating. (Why do I never spell accommodating right on the first try? WHY?!?) Any suggestions for bike short comfort? I really don’t want to shell out bike short money for something that I’ll wear for a maximum of 5ish months (I’m pretty sure that biking will not be the first exercise I’ll get back to after giving birth…just a feeling I have). (Also, 5 months? Seriously? That’s it?  ACK!)

I already have a swim date for Wednesday evening, and yoga plans for Friday afternoon, and will try to run on Thursday and/or Sunday….I am hoping to convince the architect to start doing weekly long walks with me on a weekend day. I’m pretty sure I’ll be mostly walking my half marathon, and want to start getting some serious distance on my feet.

South Dakota Trip – recap!

I’ve been home for almost a week now, have finally downloaded the SD pics from my camera & phone, and thought it was high time I regaled you with all the excitement! I already touched briefly on the first part of the trip. I spent Sunday night – Friday morning with my parents in Rapid City (for the uninitiated, that’s in the Black Hills, home of Mt. Rushmore & other exciting things).

Wednesday evening, I borrowed my mom’s car (like a teenager! cool!) and went to visit my friend Steph and her family. Stephanie & I went to college together and hung out a wee bit during that time. She is made of awesome sauce, and I am so glad that she lives near my parents, because that means every time I go visit them, I get to see her, her very cool husband, and her two fantastic kiddos (who are somehow starting 3rd grade & kindergarten today – not sure how that happened).

We had a great dinner (garden fresh! a woman after my own heart!), a lovely post-dinner walk, and then Legos! and Lego star wars! (Lego me is a faceless robber, in case you were wondering). We had so much fun that we forgot to take any pictures. :( So, I made Steph come to my parents’ house the next day for a photo shoot, because it would be a crime to NOT have a picture of the this much awesomeness in existence:

This is obviously before my sudden growth spurt….

Thursday was pretty low key. I worked on homework, went to the farmers’ market with my mom, and made a rental car reservation. Friday morning, I was up bright & early to get ready for my long drive. But first, of course, pictures!

DSC00279

After the photoshoot (we just asked one of the papparazzi standing about, obvs), Mom drove me to the airport to pick up my car. I had a brief moment of panic at the rental car counter when I couldn’t find my license or debit card – I hadn’t used them all week. For a moment I was afraid I’d left them at home, then common sense prevailed – there’s no way I could’ve boarded the plane w/o my license! – and I checked the zipper pocket of my carry on and found them.

I got in my sweet Ford Fusion (ha!) and headed out. I like western South Dakota, but it can be a bit desolate. If I hadn’t been worried about time, I would’ve taken the Badlands loop, but I didn’t want to get to Sioux Falls and be rushing to pick up the architect at the airport!

Rest stop view

I stopped 3 times on my way across the state, and after my first stop (in Kadoka, SD), I discovered that my car had satellite radio! YAY! I listened to a 90s station in preparation for seeing my two other college besties!

I’d been craving Taco Johns since Wednesday night (mmmmm….Taco Bravo & potato oles with nacho cheese), so when I stopped for lunch in Chamberlain, that’s what I got. So nasty. So disgusting. So good.

Chamberlain is right on the Missouri River, and if I’d cared, I could’ve gotten some awesome shots of the river. However, I didn’t care, so you will have to use your imagination:

After that, I drove the rest of the way to Sioux Falls, only stopping once to talk on the phone. (Sure, I can drive 80 mph and talk on the phone at the same time – after all the road’s pretty straight, but I decided that it might be a bit safer to just pull into a rest stop.)

Finally, after driving all day, I got to my hotel, and bestie #1 (Sara & I lived together for two years - practically 3) came to my hotel room! YAY! My phone kept making noises, which apparently sounded like pictures, so there was a “why are you taking pictures of my feet” joke. Obviously, what came next is no surprise:

IMAG0527-1-1

After an hour or so, she had to head home and I had to head to the airport to pick up the architect! YAY! I hadn’t seen him for over 5 days, and I was pretty excited.

We headed back to the hotel & chilled for approximately 10 minutes before heading downtown to meet Sara, her bf, and bestie #2 (my roommate from my senior year in college & 3 years in LA, Marcy) and her husband for sushi! I was a bit nervous about sushi in one of the most landlocked places you can actually find in the US, but it was pretty good. :)

***Saturday***

Saturday morning, I finished up my homework, and then headed over to Marcy’s to meet her and Sara for our day of fun! The architect dropped me off & headed out for his own day of fun (taking pictures of old downtown Sioux Falls, and relaxing at the hotel).

I got an excellent surprise when, in addition to Sara, Sara’s MOM also showed up. She is one of my favorite moms of all time (next to my own, of course), and we went out for a lovely ladies’ lunch, and then, to the mall. As we were leaving the mall so I could go back to my hotel, rest a bit, and collect the architect, we ran into my sister! CRAZY!

Saturday evening, we all reconvened at Marcy’s house so her chef husband could make us fantastic fajitas and we could spend the evening watching funny You Tube videos.

All too soon, the evening was over…but not before we got pictures!

I will have to photoshop Steph into one of these pics – she really should’ve been there, right?

ANYWAYS, – SUNDAY!

Sunday, the architect & I headed over to pick up Liz, and then we drove to Madison, home of one of my mother’s brothers and his family. I hadn’t seen them in a while, and we had a lovely lunch. All too soon, it was time to head to Lake Norden to see my maternal grandparents. We spent an hour or so with them before heading back.

DSC00331

On the way back to Sioux Falls, we drove through Arlington – a town I lived in for five years as a wee lass (Liz was born while we lived there) and we drove by the old house.

DSC00333

It looks so much smaller than I remember (from when I was 7). Then, we drove through Brookings (where I went to undergrad) and drove by the two houses I lived in as a Jr and Sr in college. The architect was not impressed with either.  I didn’t get a pic of my senior house, but when I was a Jr, Sara & I lived in an old Victorian that had been divided into three very tiny apartments. Her bedroom was an addition to the house, and had been build where the porch must have been originally. They didn’t take the original window out when they added it, so we had a window between our bedrooms. It was an awesome novelty for the first couple of weeks, and then it was awesome because when she would sleep through her alarm, I could open the window & shut it off!  :)

They are (I hope) restoring it now…I swear it didn’t look like this when we lived there…

IMAG0530

That night, we ordered room service & I fell asleep EARLY.

The next morning, we went out for breakfast, then headed back to the hotel to pack up. We met my sister for lunch, and then the architect  & I went on one last midwestern adventure. We drove to Minnesota so he could check that off the list. After touring the exciting town of Pipestone, we went back to Sioux Falls, handed in the car, and got on the plane home.

And that is the end of my SD Adventure!  If you stuck with it this long, you are probably from South Dakota and were hoping to see more pictures of yourself.

I had a great time on the trip – it was so good to see everyone! There were friends I hadn’t seen since May 2007 and family I hadn’t seen since who knows when!

I was, however, super happy to be home, in my own bed. Next time, however, I’m going to need a vacation day after I get back before going to work. Tuesday was brutal (sorry for my abrupt exit at book club tuesday night, fellow clubbers! So tired!)

Happy week, all!

Three (3) Things Thursday

1. I am working from home today. I have a gigantic to-do list, but I am confident it will all get done. Why? Because when I work at home, people who send me emails cannot come into my office 2 minutes later to (a) confirm that I got the email and then (b)talk about said email until I fantasize about stabbing their eyeballs out with my pen.

Full disclosure: I found a photo of a snake being stabbed with a ballpoint pen, and almost used that, but then decided the hints of animal cruelty (the note insisted the snake had been found dead….)+ the fact that it was a snake might be too disturbing. You’re welcome.

2. Starting next week, I am a bona fide manager type person. I will have 2.75 people reporting to me! (Actually, I will have four people, but two of them are not full time). I will have to delegate to them! And chastise them (hopefully  not too much of this). And conduct annual reviews. AND, one of my direct reports will (hopefully sooner rather than later) have two direct reports of her own, which means I will also have indirect reports. This is so effing fancy. I hope I don’t suck. (I don’t think I will.)

I'm watching you!

3. Non work related third thing: OMG, people! I started this hours ago, and apparently couldn’t think of anything non-work related (that, or I was actually too busy, I don’t know, WORKING!). So – thing #3…this weekend is one of my college BFF’s wedding shower/bachelorette party. It makes me sad that I can’t be there, although I will be at the wedding in August! (yay!) I wish I had all the moneys so that I could just afford to jet off to South Dakota for the weekend. (Although if I had all the moneys, I would very seldom use that money to go to South Dakota….just sayin’…)

Yep, lots of it really is this empty. It's more of a desolate beauty.

Weekend in Review

These two-day weekends are still taking a bit of getting used to! I was sooooo tired last week. I haven’t been sleeping well (hyposomnia!) (yay book club!), and have been working a few ridiculously long days.  So, Friday date night was supposed to be Harry Potter (totes just typed Happy Potter, which would be his less well-known and irritatingly optimistic cousin) at the beer & pizza theater down the street from my house, but by the time the architect picked me up from work, I was all “need sleepy! no movies!”

So, we went and grabbed a quick bite o’ food and went home to veg on the couch (and watch Harry Potter [typed Harpy this time; what is wrong w/ me?] #7A in preparation). I barely even dozed off during the movie! Go me!

Saturday morning, I met Sarah for our long run. On the schedule we had 10 miles, we’d decided to do 12 miles, and had picked out a figure 8 loop in Lake Oswego. We’d never run there before, so thought we’d mix things up a bit.

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for the run. Overcast, cool, and occasional mist to keep us cool. The route? Beautiful. The bad? HILLS! I think the entire first loop was uphill. Seriously. Also, we got lost. Which we should’ve expected. That pretty much happens every time we try a new route. Glad I had my phone, though! After a while, when we hadn’t come to our turn, we looked it up on the map & realized we’d passed the turn about a mile previously. We decided to roll with it, and instead of running on the North Shore road, we did the South Shore. It really was gorgeous.

Pretty bridges

Sarah

Doesn’t Sarah look happy & full of energy? She is a GREAT actress!

We got back to the start at about 8 miles, and decided it was good. As Zach pointed out yesterday, you have to take into account the vertical gain during the run, which probably added another couple miles, right? RIGHT?

After running, we grabbed some bagels & coffee and then headed to the Portland Farmer’s Market to pick up our CSA share. We are splitting a share, which was advertised as enough for a family of four each week. Since we are each families of two, it seemed great!

The CSA share has been a bit sparse. And a little disappointing. For instance, in this week’s share, we got two heads of broccoli. One of which looked like this:

IMAG0460

Also included were some wilty looking greens, 11 roma tomatoes (that were mysteriously placed under the other items in the bag, leading to some tomato bruising), a bag of green beans (that looked great!), and 4 zucchini. Previous shares have included apples (that were obviously from last fall) and potatoes (ditto).  So sad, right?

ANYWAYS, Saturday afternoon, after I got home, was packed with homework. Lots of stuff to do. I seriously don’t know what I’ll do with my life when I’m done with school!  I will have so much free time!

By the time Saturday evening rolled around, I was (again) exhausted. We had a low-key evening with Harry (spelled it right the first time!) Potter, el fin, and I was in bed early again.

Sunday was a busy day – I can’t even believe that was just yesterday!

I woke up at about 7:15 so I could get read to go spectate Jen’s triathlon at Vancouver Lake. When I woke up, I had a text from her saying it was pouring & she might not go. A couple minutes later she texted saying it was ON! so I got up, got dressed & headed to the ‘Couv to meet Emily. We loaded up on caffeine & headed through the drizzle to the race site. We got there just in time! Jen was in transition #1, having killed it on the swim! We were able to see her get on the bike & take off!

IMAG0465

The skies were low and heavy, but the rain was holding off…for now.

It started raining while we were waiting for her to come back, but it mostly wasn’t too bad.  At least for us spectators :)

We got to see all the charity leaders (and never did quite figure out what that meant) come into the bike & start on the run, and then Jen came back in, looking really strong. We stalked her down the transition, yelling at her over a hedge (yelling at her encouragingly, of course), and then cheered her out of transition two. It was raining a fairly decent amount at this time, so I kept my phone safely tucked away in my pocket so it wouldn’t get wet. (Or, perhaps I just forgot.)

I did manage to check Emily, Zach & I into Frenchman’s Bar on Facebook (it’s not really a bar), so maybe I wasn’t too concerned about my phone!

We cheered for all the runners coming out of T2 for about 15 minutes before heading over to the finish area.

Pretty soon, Jen zoomed across the finish line.

IMAG0466

She placed second in her age group – pretty good considering her year-and-a-half hiatus from triathlons, right?

Shortly after that, it started raining in earnest. Driving back home was a little nerve wracking! The freeway lane lines were barely visible in the rain and there were a few big puddles to navigate through after I got off the freeway.

The rest of the afternoon was spent alternately lazing about & working on the bathroom remodel. (The architect is doing the plans & drawings now, and I occasionally helped by sending pictures of tile.)

Around 5, we headed to Rogue to meet up with birthday boy Andrew & his lovely wife Lisa for celebratory beers and gifties.

All too soon, the day was over, and I was tucked in bed in anticipating of the 5 am alarm clock.

This week is supposed to be warmer & sunnier than last week, but I am hoping that tomorrow forecast of gray skies and drizzle holds true for my planned afternoon run!

Happy week, y’all!

Best weekend ever?

Despite all my craziness and stress, I had a fantabulous weekend.

It started out auspiciously – I actually slept (with sleeping! and REM! [the dream state, not the band, that wouldn't have been restful]), and then? I slept until 9:30. That is highly unusual for me, but it was good.

I woke up all refreshed, took a shower, did some homework and looked at the internets, and then, I was away!

I met Sarah in Beaverton and we hit up a McMenamin’s for lunch. After splitting a calzone & salad (and drink a beer, which we did not split), we were underway.

We headed out to Kookoolan Farms (near Yamhill) to check things out. Their farm store was amazing. Milk! Mead! Kombucha! Cheese making supplies! Meat!

Sarah bought some cheese making supplies and I purchased a couple cheese molds, a wax brush (for cheese waxing), and oh yeah, 1/8 of cow. And, as a reward for buying 1/8 of a cow, I got a cookbook!

I cannot wait to go back to pick up my meat and buy some milk and eggs and other exciting things!

After the farm excitement, we decided to stop at the Grand Lodge for a beer (we were doing a McMenamin’s tour). As we drove up to the Lodge I saw a banner:

Medieval Faire

April 29-30

It was the 29th! There was a Medieval Faire! I believe we were both a wee bit excited.

We headed to the Faire and were a bit saddened to find that we had to go inside to get beers as the Yardhouse was not yet open. Fortunately, we were able to take our beers outside & wander through the fair. They were just setting up, so it really wasn’t that exciting, although we did see an old man in a kilt tying his shoe, which was almost exciting. And then we saw Gandalf in his best scarlet dress robes!

It was almost too much excitement to handle (and certainly too much to photograph!), so we headed back to Portland. After parking & dropping off some cheese making supplies, we continued our day of fun by heading to Powell’s, where we each bought cookbooks (although I only bought two – one for curing meat & one for preserving, unfortunately I cannot, for the life of me, remember the name of that one, but it has pretty pictures…).

Then – more food! And beer! (Although not at a McMenamin’s.)

But wait! There’s more!

We headed to a cookbook signing where I (you guessed it) bought another cookbook. And got it signed. Sarah already had that cookbook, so she bought one by the other author present.

Then, there was food! (Although I didn’t eat any.) And more beer! (Although I didn’t drink any, and opted for Prosecco instead.)

And then, unfortunately, it was time to go home. BUT – such a great day.

Saturday & Sunday were also awesome. Forest Park run – 7 miles! New running shoes! Date night with the architect! Gardening! Sunburn! Champagne on the patio!

Glad those good days were there to get me through the week! All this sunshine sure hasn’t hurt, either.
