Three (3) Things Thursday

1. I was up until 3 am last night. Three A M. That is very late. I am running on about 3.5 hours of sleep right now. I just hope the random giggling that starts when I’m really tired holds off until I get home tonight. It tends to frighten people.

2. Last night, we had the best dinner. Risotto with edamame, asparagus (from my CSA), and homegrown greens (arugula and spinach). Oh, and the garlic was also from my garden! (Sadly, the edamame and onions were not. Nor was the rice, actually. And not the wine, either. BUT – the chicken stock was homemade!) The parsley on top? Also from my garden.

Oh wait – what’s that on top? Parmesan cheese? Hmmm….where did that come from?

 

3. Oh yeah, bitches. FINALLY! Cheese success. The whole process started on July 19, 2010. I made parmesan. And then, I put it in my cheese cave. Eventually, I waxed it and put it back in the cave (which is actually a wine fridge) for further aging. It is recommended that one ages a Parmesan for 11-12 months minimum.

In late August/early September, I also made two wheels of cheddar, which only need about 4 months of aging. I tested these cheeses in December. They were, by far, the most disgusting cheeses ever. Seriously.

So – I was nervous last night when I decided it was time.

We cut a big wedge out of it & grated it for the risotto.

I think I need to make more immediately – especially since it takes a year to age!

After the disappointments with the cheddar, I feel totally vindicated and am ready to make some more cheese!  I’m thinking cheddar this weekend, and maybe another wheel of parm in a month (the next three-day weekend I have at home & party-free).

 

 

Weekend (with pictures!)

I worked Friday (my second Friday doing so), so that doesn’t even really count as a weekend. After work, however, I headed over to Zach & Jen‘s with the architect’s pickup so I could help them get a few boxes over to their new home that evening.  We got quite a few boxes over between the pickup & their car, and then I got the grand tour of their super cute house and awesome garden. (Also they rewarded me with beer! Yay!)

I headed home, but not before stealing Jen’s cellphone (apparently I require more rewards than just a beer) and they chased me all the way back to my ‘hood before I relented and gave back the phone. I then took the architect out for his carb-load dinner and pre-race beer and we settled in for the night.

The next morning wasn’t too rushed. There was coffee and breakfast and loading of the car – and then we were on the way. I drove him to the race start (this bike ride is so laid back; you can start anytime between 6 & 9, and we were aiming for an 8 am start). We got lost. And by the time we got there and got the race number and everything, it was nearly 8:30.

While waiting for the architect to get his gear together, I bike sat and people watched.

After he rode off, I hopped back in the car & headed to Manning, OR – one of the trailheads on the Banks-Vernonia trail.  Before I got there, I stopped at a gas station to…*ahem* use their facilities, and because I always feel bad when I do that without buying something, I bought a Diet Coke and a Clif Bar. (This is important later. Kind of.)

I finished making my way to the trail and emailed my “don’t die running” buddy to let her know I was starting, what my planned direction was, and when I anticipated being done.

Now – before I talk about the run, I just want to say that the last long run I did was April 30 and was 7 miles. Since then, I haven’t run over 3.5 miles, and have been running about once/week. On my schedule for this week was 9 miles. Which is quite a jump when one hasn’t been running, right?

So, I decided that I would run out & back towards Vernonia (uphill out & downhill back) for a total of 7, and then, if I felt good, I would head out towards Banks (flat, but not as pretty) for either 1, 2, or 3 miles, depending on how I felt.

The first 7 miles were great, actually. Since it was my first long run in a while, and I didn’t really need to WIN anything, I decided that after mile 1, I would walk a bit at the top of each mile, just to save my legs. The splits for my first out:

Mile 1: 10:26

Mile 3: 11:56
Mile 4: 11:04 (turn around at 3.5)

I was feeling good – both about my legs and my times. I really want to run my long runs about 30 seconds slower than my planned marathon pace. Since I don’t actually have a PMP for reals yet, I’m basing it on an 11:10 pace (about 15 minutes faster than my last marathon), so am aiming for an avg pace of 11:40-ish; so far, so good!

I turned around at mile 3.5 and headed back – downhill (slightly) now. I felt really good, and had to work not to go TOO fast, because I wanted my quads to function the next day. I kept up my brief walk at the top of each mile. During this section, it also became apparent that this was the longest run by far I’d done in my new shoes. The balls of my feet started hurting, but I was able to walk it out on those short walks (I had about 10 miles on the shoes, never more than 3.5 miles at a time, before Saturday’s run).

I stopped at my car, cursing myself for not having found my fuel belt before my run. I was sooooo thirsty. I drank about 20 oz of water & ate most of the (aforementioned) clif bar. I also updated my “don’t die” buddy (she was done with her run) with a new ETA and headed back on the trail.

I decided that I would do my scheduled 9, but then at the turnaround point, I felt okay, so I decided to go for that 1/2 mile extra to make my run an even 10. I felt great to the 8 mile mark, but definitely felt it the last couple of miles. I took walk breaks every 1/2 mile after mile 8.

I was so happy to be back at the car. I got an email from my “don’t die” buddy just as I was walking to the car, since I was later than I said I’d be done (my slower pace on the last 3 miles + my decision to eat & drink more after sending her my planned finish time were to blame). I confirmed that I was done and not dead (and actually pretty happy).

I am pretty happy with this run! It was my first double-digit run since early March 2010. I finished the whole thing with a good pace, even with my decision to walk at the top of every mile. My feet felt fine about 20 minutes later. The only regret? Not having water/fuel with me on the run. I haven’t had to carry anything for ages, and had lost my fuel belt. Also, I hadn’t even planned on fuel at all – so glad I bought that gas station Clif Bar! (I told you it was kind of important!)

ANYWAYS – my day was not yet done! After stretching (trying to be a lot better about this this time around), I hopped back in the car & headed to Pacific City.

I got in about 1:30 with a desperate need for food and a bathroom – not necessarily in that order. I headed into the Pelican Pub & Brewery and said, “I really want to eat, but do you have a bathroom?” They pointed me in the right direction, and after waiting in line for AGES, I finally got in. I took care of business and changed out of my stanky running clothes. I headed back to the front of the pub and got seated. I had some really good Mahi Mahi tacos, an IPA and apple crisp for dessert. After deciding I couldn’t draw out the sitting inside any longer, I headed out to wait for the architect.

He was texting me occasionally, and I knew he was going to be much later than he’d planned. There was a crazy-ass headwind, and his chain was all janky.  In 2009, he finished the ride so quickly that I didn’t see him cross the finish line. It took waaay longer this time.

Finally, though, I saw him approaching the finish line!

Yay, architect!

He got off the bike and I gave him his finish line gift (a Pelican jersey), and he checked his bike. We walked to the beach and sat for a bit.

At that point, he decided it was time for food. He didn’t want to wait in line for the questionable-looking post-race food, so we went across the street for some pizza (no line!).

After pizza, we headed out again – this time to McMinnville.

We stopped briefly near Grand Ronde so that I could check out the porto bank Pow Wow grounds.

Finally – the hotel! We stayed at the Hotel Oregon in McMinnville, and it was…cute. I knew we would be sharing a bathroom with other rooms on the floor. I didn’t know that our room would be directly over the stage with the cats in heat karaoke. (Also? no TV! How can I have a hotel experience without cable?)

After getting settled and changing clothes, we went up to the rooftop bar for a much deserved beer.

We headed back to the room, and as soon as the karaoke stopped, we were both out.

The next morning, we had breakfast (so convenient to not have to leave the building) and headed the rest of the way home so that I could do homework (yay!).

I did procrastinate a little in the garden before buckling down, and we got to harvest the first radishes of the season!

The rest of the day was spent doing homework and recovering from our combined exertions (i.e. nothing very exciting or picture-worthy).

Weekend in Review

Another busy weekend, although honestly, if I typed “this was a very mellow, low-key weekend, I did nothing,” you would call me a liar.

Also – this is the third time I have started this blog post. It keeps freezing & disappearing, and I am putting you on notice, Word Press! Or something.

ANYWAYS – I’m sure the first couple of times I typed this out, I was much wittier, so if this is boring, just pretend it’s awesome.

Friday I had my third (of four) standing up straight appointments. Although I’m making great strides in standing (outstanding!), there is a small problem. I’ve started pronating in my right foot as a reaction to the surgery. This pronation is causing my fifth metatarsal to spread outwards, which in turn is causing the little toe to point inwards. Or, in other words, the EXACT SAME FUCKING THING THAT CAUSED ME TO HAVE SURGERY IN THE FIRST PLACE. Ahem. Sorry. That makes me shouty. It also makes me want to kick the surgeon in the shins (with my left foot) for saying I didn’t need physical therapy. Clearly that would’ve been a waste of time, preventing a recurrence of the problem that was now caused by the surgery that was supposed to fix it.

Moving on.

After standing up straight & balancing on one leg, I went home and did some homework before hopping on a bus to go to Surreptitious Brew Review #24 at Tugboat Brewing. Surreptitious, because last time, I did my usual facebook invite, and eleventy hundred people showed up and tried to fit in a space designed for 10 people.

This place was a wee bit bigger, but still wee, so only a few people came (invites were sent based on a complicated algorithm that took into account a) who shows up most often and b) who seems the most enthusiastic about beer).

Brew review #24 - April 8, 2011

After brew reviewing (I really liked this place, and am committing to posting brew reviews 22, 23 & 24 in the next three weeks. I promise), we headed across the street to Bailey’s taproom, which is just a great place to grab a beer.

Saturday morning, I got up bright & early to head to the Living Yoga yogathon (give me money, if you so desire – link in the sidebare). I am on the yogathon committee (with Jen & Emily – Emily is the head honcho).

It was such a great day! We got all set up, and then people showed up to register. I participated (along with fellow yogathoner Sarah!) in the yoga class and the guided meditation, before helping break everything down & heading home to finish my paper.

I also finished my bacon on Saturday. I had made a batch of maple-flavored bacon and one of just plain old salty bacon. The maple bacon was fantastic! So good. Awesome. The other bacon? A wee bit on the salty side. BUT – it will be great for soups, I’m sure. No extra salt needed!

Next time, I’m going to plan things better so I can take advantage of the neighbor’s smoker without having to bother said neighbor immediately after she’s had surgery.

Bacon! April 9, 2011

Saturday night was pretty exciting. The architect & I went out to dinner (used a Groupon) at a place I used to love (definitely used to – Saturday night was not a good experience), and then went out dancing all night went home, popped in a movie, and were asleep before 10.

Sunday morning was a lazy morning. I made us breakfast: maple bacon, homemade bread (courtesy the architect), and eggs (courtesy anonymous donors) topped with parsley from my herb garden.

After breakfast, we kicked it into high gear. There was cleaning. And vacuuming. And laundry. And grocery shopping. And finally replacing my headlights on my car so I can drive at night (the dim lights died, one after another, the weekend we were in Seattle). And then – some gardening.

I planted peas and arugula and radishes, some hops, and removed a stupid bush of evil thorniness. I also turned over all the dirt in the main garden, getting it ready for tilling (not that too much is going in any time soon – carrots, beets & onions, but the rest of that garden will be given over to peppers, tomatoes & corn, none of which should be planted any time soon (step away from the tomato plants, Portlanders! just because you CAN buy them in April doesn’t mean you should).

I reacquainted myself with all my trees, offered some encouraging words, gave myself a couple new blisters (hoeing is such hard work!), and then, after the architect finished mowing the lawn, we sat on the patio and had a beer.  Shortly after that, we set up the motion-activated sprinkler to try to discourage the stupid dog from down the street from shitting in my newly planted garden. I hate him & his stupid owners who just let the thing out every morning to go do his business wherever he feels like. I am about one more 1-gallon bag full of crap from buying them a bunch of baggies & returning what their dog has left behind. FOR REAL. HATE!!!

After drowning the hate with the beer, it was time for dinner.

We made linguine with fresh asparagus (unfortunately not from my garden), tomatoes, garlic (this time from my garden) and some of the homemade chicken sausage from last weekend (ooh – and homemade broth from my pantry!). It was so good. SO GOOD. Honestly, one of the best meals I’ve ever made.

Last night was another early night – all that hoeing made me tired.

This morning, I was getting ready to work & went to grab my glasses. The new ones. The ones I’ve had for a week and a half.

And they were gone!

I was so sad – where could they be? I remembered having them on Friday at the bar, and I also remembered taking them off Friday at the bar & stowing them in their handy little case. Did I leave them at the bar?

I know I hadn’t worn them since Friday night.

I had a vague memory of shoving them in my purse before heading out on Saturday, but maybe that was just wishful thinking?

This is why I can’t have nice things, people!

Good news, though – they have been found. I did indeed shove them in my purse on Saturday morning, but they hopped right out at some point during the yogathon. Perhaps they wanted to try a couple poses. They were picked up by the Living Yoga ED and saved from being lost forever, and tomorrow I get to have them back.

Yay!  Who doesn’t love a happy ending?

Another weekend of domestic bad-assery

A decent weekend, although I spent most of it feeling just a bit off. My stomach seems really unhappy and I don’t quite know how to fix that.

Friday was originally scheduled as a full day of fun. I dropped my car off to get the broken window replaced. Emily kindly fetched me & toted me around the city. We met up with Sarah for yoga, then lunch, and then the aforementioned stomach issues made themselves known & I bailed on the rest of the afternoon’s plans. I headed home where I moaned theatrically & watched a lot of Buffy.

Friday evening, I resolutely picked up a picnic & headed to SE for movies in the park (it was Princess Bride – how could I say no?) I didn’t actually make it to the START of the movie, before I begged the architect to take me home. At home, we watched a movie & I went to bed early.

Saturday was a better day – I did some harvesting!

I spent the rest of Saturday canning beans & beet pickles. I had to take an unscheduled break in the middle to go buy a new pressure canner (and more pint jars). My old one wasn’t pressurizing – it took over 2 hours to get up to 10 lbs of pressure! I also picked up a new 20 qt stockpot so I can make more cheese! YAY!

On Saturday, I ended up with 10 pints of beans and only three pints of beet pickles. Next year I’m definitely planting more beets! I love beet pickles, and roasted beets, and I don’t even have any beets left for roasting! :(

Saturday evening, the architect & I made garden bounty pizza (garlic, onions & zucchini all from the garden; crust made with whey from homemade cheese) and drank wine!

Sunday, I went out for brunch w/ my kickass neighbor, and then headed home for another round of domestic badd-assery.

I used a few chicken carcasses I had laying around (in the freezer – of course!) and my new giant stockpot and made a huge pot of chicken broth. After it was finished & the fat was skimmed, I canned 9 pints of broth. The only reason I canned nine pints instead of 13 pints was because I ran out of jars! So – I have a couple quarts of broth in the fridge – guess I’ll be doing a lot of cooking this week!

I also made some ricotta cheese yesterday – although accidentally. I had bought milk to make cheese about 10 days ago, and due to my car getting broken into last weekend, ended up not making the cheese then. The milk was approaching the end of its natural life, and that is not the most ideal time to try to make it into cheese. So – I have cheese, just not what I was expecting. Oh, well! It still tastes good!

I started feeling off again yesterday afternoon, and spent most of the evening on the couch, watching Buffy (that’s what I do when I don’t feel well) and making the architect fetch me stuff!

Overall – a fairly productive weekend.

Next weekend – more cheese! and pickles! And the planting of the fall garden! Woo!

Corn Chronicles 2010 – Part Who Knows?

You guys! I have sucked at doing weekly garden posts. And it’s already July 20! This is one crazy ass speedy summer.

But, fortunately for everyone who’s just been DYING to know what my garden looks like – here are some updates!

The corns are getting so big & strong. Most of them are starting to tassel and if you look really closely, you can see baby corns forming. So far the big winners are Quinta, Amy & James corns. (James is making a surprising comeback after last year’s wimpy-ness…do you think my dad is cheating & using divine intervention?) The rest are not far behind, though!

My carrots are coming along (I’ve eaten a couple of them, and they are EXCELLENT!)

It’s nearly time to make some beet pickles…yum.

My lemon tree is doing its best to make me a few lemons. It’s the first year, so I wasn’t expecting any!

The artichokes are so tall…but they are not very artichokey yet….this was an accidental purchase, so I’ve no idea what’s going to happen here.

I have a few viney things growing – some zucchini and pumpkins, and the cucumbers are starting, too!

The hops are taller than me – and grow a few inches every day!

I am concerned about the tomatoes & peppers – they just aren’t as robust as last year. It’s kind of sad!

I was hoping for millions of tomatoes this year, but so far, this is all I have:

I do have some beautiful flowers, though!

It’s so much fun to walk around every night & discover something new. The other night, we had pizza made from our blue potatoes, an onion from the garden, homemade cheeses (goat & mozzarella) & pizza crust made from the leftover whey (although I made the cheese & picked the product, the architect & our kick-ass neighbor actually did most of the cooking) . I love being able to make a meal out of what I’ve grown myself! (The other things on the pizza were artichoke hearts & tomatoes, both of which could have come from my garden if it was the end of August, right?)
