Interview with an Amy!

Because I knew I would be nearly dead by today, and certainly not up to thinking of things to write about all by myself, I asked Jen from Running Stories to interview me. Because that’s how I roll. (Actually, I don’t usually roll that way – because now there will be pressure to post the part where I tell you that you can ask me to interview you, and then I’ll have to come up with interview questions, and inevitably it will cause me more stress than it really should.)

1. Name something about Portland that strikes you as really odd after living in Southern California.
The hours kept here – I remember, shortly after moving here, wanting to go out to dinner at 8 PM. So the architect & I went out to dinner. And the first three restaurants we tried to go to were either closed (it was 8:30 by now) or closing and no longer seating people. We ended up at a bar. Seriously – what’s up with that? Why can’t I go out to eat at 8:30?
2. What is your biggest current unhealthy vice?
You know, I don’t really have that many RIGHT NOW. I’m currently off Diet Coke (the artificial sweeteners seem to be giving me headaches) and cookies (make me feel icky), and I only smoke about once a year (well, I only BUY cigarettes once a year, about once every 2-3 months I’ll drink a martini at a bar & then bum a smoke off of someone nearby). Apparently, I’m ridiculously healthy. Although I could probably stand to not have a glass of wine EVERY night.  So, to make a long answer short (too late!), drinking wine every night.
3. If you could meet any author (living or dead) and talk to them about anything you’d like for an entire evening, who would it be?
This is such a hard question! I love me some books, and there are so many authors I’d love to chat with, but chances are I’d get all nervous & then drink too much wine, try to bum a smoke & then say stupid things. Authors that immediately came to mind are: Stephen King, Tom Robbins, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, or, for a little more light-hearted fun – some bloggers that are also authors (with wine, this would rock): Laurie Perry, Jen Lancaster, Jeannette Fulda, or Shauna Reid.  Those ladies seem like fun.
4. What is your favorite physical attribute about yourself?
I actually thought about this a lot. Even though I’ve lost tons of weight, I still don’t really like the way my body looks. When I mention my ambition to lose 15 more lbs, I sometimes get comments such as: ‘you don’t need to lose anymore weight.’ Attributes that others might list are not my favorite (boobs, too big for running). But, I think I’m going to have to go with my neck & collarbone. That’s the one feature that I really appreciate – and I didn’t so much have a collarbone six years ago, so it’s nice to see. Also, I really have to scrunch my head back to create a 2nd chin now, and I appreciate that.
5. If you could have a second home anywhere in the world, where would it be? (if money was no object, and all logistics aside)
Somewhere warm & beachy. Probably a secluded cove on the eastern (Caribbean) shore of Mexico. I’d love to just spend every November 1- March 15 in the sun, on the beach, eating guacamole and fresh bananas (although probably not together).

To play along:

1. Leave me a comment saying, “Interview me.”
2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. (I get to pick the questions).
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview others in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

Worky worky

I am tagging myself today because I am so busy that this is all I can come up with – unless you want to hear about what I’m working on – which, you know, no.

10 years ago:

  1. I was 1 quarter into my senior year of college. I was really, really ill – and didn’t make it to many classes (had to conserve energy for going out to the bars).
  2. I lived in Brookings, SD with my two best girls. Although it was not the most comfortable year in terms of living situations, ever – we’re all still friends, so it worked out in the end.
  3. I was trying to decide between moving to LA or NYC after graduation. When it got cold in South Dakota AND in New York, that pretty much made that decision.
  4. I had no idea what I wanted to do with myself after graduation. I was thinking vaguely about “getting a job” or “becoming suddenly rich.”
  5. I started internet dating. I felt waaay ahead of the curve. I met a guy who was getting his master’s in PE (or something) and was good at Scrabble. We went out a few times. He wasn’t bad, really.

5 Things on my To-Do List today:

  1. Go to knitting night
  2. Blog post
  3. Put together 75% of [work related thing - redacted]
  4. Run
  5. Finish [another redacted work related thing]

5 Things that I would do if I were a millionaire (I’m copying POM & changing this to billionaire):

  1. Pay off all of my debts (and the architect’s, too, I suppose), including student loans, houses, cars…
  2. Give much to charity
  3. Travel
  4. Invest (although maybe I would invest in my ‘under the mattress fund’ right now)
  5. Help the architect open his own firm

5 Places I have lived:

  1. Kansas City, MO
  2. Brookings, SD
  3. Venice, CA
  4. Los Angeles, CA
  5. Portland, OR
(I thought about adding a different 3rd, so I could list all 5 states I’ve lived in, but in the end, I just couldn’t admit publicly that I lived in North Dakota for a total of about 6 months.)

5 Jobs I’ve had:

  1. K-Mart grill & deli food service worker (my first job that involved taxes, and the first [and so far only] that involved worker’s comp).
  2. Person who works at a daycare/summer camp for children. No, seriously.
  3. Telemarketer
  4. Development Assistant for a psychopathic idiot
  5. Development Assistant for a racist idiot
I didn’t list any of my good jobs – they’re not as amusing.

I tag you!

6 Random Things

I was tagged by the Ambitious One, and enjoy being tagged (makes me feel like part of the in-crowd).  So, six random things about me.

1) If there is one thing I hate, it’s travel. I don’t like to fly, I don’t like strangers, I don’t like public transportation, and being in new places makes me incredibly anxious.

2) If I had an unlimited budget, I would totally travel all the time. There are so many things I want to see, places I want to go. (Yes, I am an enigma.)

3) I was raised in a series of small & smaller towns in South Dakota, the daughter of a Methodist minister. (When people find out that I’m a preacher’s kid, they are either shocked, or they smile & nod, as if that just confirmed their hunch. Not sure why.)

4) I am allergic to mushrooms. I don’t know if it’s all mushrooms – I’ve never done a lot of experimentation. I’ve never had a portobello, or a chanterelle, or a shiitake, or a magic mushroom. That makes me sad – but not so sad that I’m willing to give it a try. (Also? I’ve never had anything with truffles or truffle oil. They’re so….fungus-y.)

5) I am a terrible housekeeper. My home is not clean, nor uncluttered, nor anything good. I try to hide my lack of skill (and motivation) by always having lots of food & drugging people into a food coma. So far, it seems to be working. I’m also trying to get to two points – a) the point where I just keep it clean enough & don’t worry about the rest and b) the point where I can afford bi-weekly maid service.  (I also think it might not be such a bad idea to invest in some Pledge – I haven’t ever dusted in my house. Ever.)

6) I love making lists. I make a list every day at work for tasks that need to be done. I make a list for things to do on my days off. I make packing lists, shopping lists, christmas card lists, pro & con lists for EVERYTHING. If you ever want me to do a meme, just make it something that’s in list form, and I’m your girl.

I tag everyone who needs something to do today.
