Corn Chronicles + Updates

First – the corn! Because I know Carrie checks here over & over on Thursdays until she finds out how her little Carrie Corn is doing.

Needless to say, we definitely achieved ‘knee-high  by the 4th of July.’

James Corn is 31″ tall. That is only a 2″ growth. My father has now resorted to threatening his little corn namesake with violence & divine retribution, which is exactly what he did to me when I was young, and you can see how well that worked (I am 5’2″ but at least I do have two ears).

Carrie Corn is 68″ tall. That is an 8″ growth from last week. She is tasseling nicely. However, she has been surpassed. She is still the second tallest, but Ullyses has finally out-grown her. It’s a close race – he is 70″ tall, so there’s no telling who will be the tallest at the end (Amy corn might still get there – she’s been neck & neck with Carrie Corn since the beginning).

Many of the corns are tasseling, and most of them have the beginnings of ears showing. They are at their most vulnerable now, so we are taking very good care of them. We have a pretty high level of nitrogen in the soil, so I don’t need to add extra fertilizer, but we are watering them. They’re all ready to get their drivers’ licenses now, which as you can imagine, it’s a little nerve-wracking for me!

The rest of the garden is doing well. We’re beginning to enjoy the fruits of our labor – summer squashes & zucchinis & potatoes. The broccoli is very nearly finished – we pulled up half the plants last night, and our last bean crop needs to be picked, too. I’m finally seeing cucumbers in there, and my pumpkins are getting pretty big!

The flowers are so beautiful right now – wish I’d remember to photograph them for you. Maybe next week!

And, for the rest of my week:

Tuesday I didn’t work. I did a 3-mile recovery run, my first run since the half. I meant to go at a slow pace & just work out the kinks & last bits of muscle soreness.

I looked down at mile 1 – 10:02. “Slow it down, Amy,” I thought to myself. “That is not a recovery pace.” (I was thinking more like 10:40 or so.

Mile 2 – 9:44. “Hmmm….that is not what I was aiming for, but I feel good. Not sore or winded or like I’m working really hard. But still, I should slow it down for my last mile.”

Mile 3 – 9:36

Yeah…..that slowing it down thing isn’t quite working for me, is it? But, I felt great after. No stiffness or soreness, and I wasn’t even too winded. I feel like I’m finally getting somewhere! All this running & hills & speedwork – it actually works! And the cross-training & weight-lifting? Seems to be helping! Who knew? (Oh wait – everyone knew that? Dammit! I thought I was on to something revolutionary.)

All that being said, this has been a pretty wussy week. I took Monday off because my quads were very, very angry, as was my whole body. I had weird feelings all day Sunday & Monday. I kept getting leg cramps & feeling like I was seriously deficient nutritionally.

Tuesday I did run. And then I ate at Taco Bell. And then, I may have gone to a concert.

Although my friend & I were ridiculously disappointed in our lack of hangovers Wednesday morning, we had no one to blame but the $9 drinks at the arena (that you couldn’t even drink at your seat! And for $9, they really should have been served in crystal & come with a shirtless masseuse named Enrique or something.)

I still didn’t get my bike & swim in yesterday because I am lazy! Home by noon. Nothing to do. Didn’t over indulge the night before. Just lazy. The architect & I did go for a walk last night, though. That was nice.

And today, I skipped my planned am run, because I suddenly realized that I have a planned trail run tomorrow and a long run on Saturday, and I have rules about running three days in a row (rules handed down from my physical therapist). So tonight is yoga (yay! I missed yoga) and then swim/run tomorrow. Run Saturday & swim/bike on Sunday. I’m volunteering at a trail race on Sunday, which is something I’ve never done, so I’m pretty excited!

I think that I always schedule too much the week after a race, and then up not being able to do it all, and then feel like a lazy slacker. I don’t often schedule more than 1 day of recovery, and I’m finding that I need 2-3 days for a half, and will probably need 2-3 TIMES that for the full.  How long do you allow for recovery after a half?

The architect & I will be headed out for some camping either the weekend of the 17th or the weekend of the 24th, so whichever weekend we’re home will see the next Brew Review and my first open water swim. SCARY! (the swim, not the beer.)

Also, grad school is a lot of work! Also one of those who knew situations!

So – what about you? What have you been up to?

Vegas, Baby

I think that may have been the best trip to Vegas ever. I’m not sure if I can even begin to tell you how much fun we had, especially not staying within the bounds of “what happens in Vegas….”

BUT, I will do my best.

The architect chauffeured my & the chicas to the airport Saturday morning. After getting through security at about 8:45 or so, we needed a bloody mary (naturally).

The flight to Vegas was pretty turbulent at the end – and our landing was definitely very, very bad. It’s a good thing there was vodka on the plane.

Once in Vegas, we made our way to our hotel. We stayed at the MGM Signature, which is the three towers behind MGM grand. We did well, people. We had a Jr. Suite – a king bed & a fold-out sofa. (Also a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi tub & a tv.) The nice thing about the Signature was that it was 100% smoke-free, so although our clothes & hair reeked of smoke, at least our room & the hallways were fresher.

We did a shopping run after checking in – one of us (who wasn’t me) forgot her party girl shirt at home & needed a replacement. We managed to stay appropriately liquidated throughout the afternoon, and then got fully tarted up for dinner.

We headed to Mandalay Bay for our dinner. After dinner, and wandering, it was time.

Time for the show.

I’m not sure there is any way to convey how fantastic it was to see a boy band that hasn’t toured in about 15 years. But damn! That was the most fun I’ve had in a long, long time.

Jordan & Joey got to come out and do a number from each of their solo albums. I didn’t get a pic of Joey, but I did manage to get this:

There was a weird interlude in the middle – a slide show called “To those we’ve lost in the last 15 years” or something like that.

It was photos of people who have died since 1994. Towards the end of the photo montage, there were pics of people that seemed to be friends and/or relatives of the Kids, but the other photos – not so sure. I mean Kurt Cobain? Tupac? Heath Ledger? Rick James? Why them and not Johnny Cash? It was confusing.

Anyways – they played a great mix of their new & old stuff.  They left the stage without having played Hanging Tough. A lot of people left. Those people were stupid. There was no way they weren’t playing that song.

Their first encore was Step by Step  followed by Summertime.

And then, finally, they played Hanging Tough.

After the show, which got out at 11:30, we headed to Eye Candy – the little dance bar in Mandalay Bay. We had a good time, and I only had to dance once. (I tried to warn my dance partner that it was not a good idea to make me dance, but he didn’t believe me. As soon as the song was over, he left the club & didn’t speak to me again. Not quite sure what happened there, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was my dancing.)

We got back to the room at about 5. I had my last drink at about 4. If you didn’t do the math, that means that I drank for approximately eleventy-hundred hours. Or 19 hours. Which is still a long time. Although you know what I did for longer than that? Wore my boots. 21 hours in my boots. They are great boots, but they are not 21 hour boots. My feet are ANGRY!

We woke up about 8:30 Sunday morning, and after a brief outing for breakfast, we laid around for a long time. About two, I hit the fitness center & ran a 5K (in 35 minutes – getting better) and then joined my compatriates by the pool.

The most disappointing things about Vegas were 1) The weather. I think that the Las Vegas city council needs to pass a law – no temps under 70! and 2) I didn’t take any photos of myself or my girls.

Sunday night was a bit slower – both because we were exhausted, and because apparently Sunday not a big party night in Vegas. We wandered for a while, hung out in MGM for awhile (at a bar that periodically had its hot bartenders & cocktail waitresses dance on the bar) and met some nice people. We had a couple of shots, and then headed back to Mandalay Bay.

We were home by 2:30 or so Sunday night, which meant a whopping 5 hours of sleep! (That’s about 8 hours in 2 nights, a little shy of my preference of 8 hours in 1 night.)

Monday morning, we sadly had to pack things up & head back. The plane ride back was pretty good – although I’m not sure that the other passengers enjoyed our almost non-stop laughter & hilarious comments. Although they should have – we are funny, funny women.

I really meant to work out when I got home last night, but for some reason, all I could muster was a bath (had to soak my feet – I lost a toenail & they were so swollen this morning, that I couldn’t put my Kenneth Coles on) and lying about doing nothing.

My in-laws get in tonight – so there’s no rest for the wicked. Fortunately, the architect did 95% of the cleaning prep work, so all I have to do is clean the bathrooms. And, since one of my October goals was to not stress, I am not stressing – even a little bit.

I hope everyone else had a good weekend! (And I hope that my good weekend, with 19 hours & 11 hours of drinking, respectively, does not make my scale too angry.)

And – you know – I think you need just one more glimpse of this:
