Happy Hallowe’en!

And Happy Samhain, too – if you celebrate such things.

And, most importantly, Happy Anniversary to me! (And the architect, obvs.)  We’ve been married five years today.

We had a GREAT Spooktacular this weekend, but alas! I have no photos to share. I didn’t take ANY of people (people who were there, please send me pics) and totally forgot to download the decorations and food pics that I did take.

I drank my weight in delightful green punch, that I kind of want to drink every day (even though that amount of sugar totally makes Alvie a hyper monkey) and believe everyone had a good time.

The architect & I celebrated our anniversary yesterday by lazing about. We exchanged gifts in early afternoon.  (And I didn’t take pictures of these, either.)

I got him an X-box 360/kinect (found an awesome deal on a refurbished one) as well as Halo 3 (he loves those Halo games) and he got me a CHAINSAW! I have my very own chainsaw! And then, it rained all afternoon so I could not go out and terrorize the neighborhood evil hedge. SAD!

You guys – I am seriously so stoked about my chainsaw. I have been wanting one for ages! I can’t believe  I am a chainsaw owner now! (Especially since I’ve had stitches twice from accidents involving 1) a small paring knife and 2) and electric meat slicer.) BUT a new accident-free, tree cutting down era is about to begin!

(Also, the Xbox is cool, too.)

ANYWAYS – Happy 5th anniversary, Mr. Architect and giver of the most awesome gift ever.

Ummm – apparently I don’t have any photos of year 1 OR the architect & I together at last year’s spooktacular! WTF, Amy?!?

ANYWAYS – I will soon post a link to my hallowe’en party photos, and then if you want, you can totally enjoy. Or not. Whatever.

Other big news today – I have my next ultrasound scheduled, so next week (Tuesday!), we will find out the sex of baby Alvie Bean! Bets? My money’s on boy, but either way, it will be awesome.

Watch out for zombies, witches, and sugar comas tonight!

Photo Essay Monday

Not too much of a photo essay for this last weekend. Nothing I did was particularly photo-worthy.

Friday, I ended up at work for waaaaaaaaay too long (especially since it was my day off). The rest of the day was spent finalizing my final paper for my very last regular course for graduate school. All done! (And, I got an A in that class! Go, me!)

Saturday was kind of a lazy day. The kind of day I thought I deserved after finishing 19 courses in just over 2 years and getting to within 17 weeks of qualifying for my Master’s Degree. I mean, I took a cat to the vet (at 8 AM!) and had a movement therapy appointment (my SI area is killing me), and then I lazed the rest of the day.

The architect, however, did not have a lazy day. Instead, he finished tiling the shower area & grouted 80% of the same area (the other 20% needs to wait for a week, since that was the part he’d finished tiling that same day):

This photo makes it look really orange, which is weird. BUT – it’s not. The tiles are white with black grout.

Sunday was a bit busier….eventually. I did some last minute Halloween shopping. Apparently the week before Halloween is not an ideal time to do that, as most of the stores had mostly switched over to Christmas decorations. I did get some good stuff, though. I am, however, still sans costume. The pregnancy costumes are all for people who are really pregnant. Painting my belly at this point would look stupid, and I’m not pregnant enough to pull of pregnant nun. I tried on some plus-sized stuff, but that was all too big, and the regular sized costumes don’t fit in the boobs and are super tight across the mid-section.  I think I’m pretty much decided to go as this:

three gold stars if you get the reference

I am super excited to get all my decorations up and have an awesomely spooktacular party this weekend, though!

Lazy Bones!

After getting through all that stuff (and picking up another pair of sweet maternity jeans), I decided I needed some healthy snacks. I have been loving bran muffins lately, and spending $2/muffin (they are humungous) from the hospital coffee shops at least once/week. I thought I could probably make my own for much less than that. And so I did. And, because the architect hates bran muffins, I made him some blueberry muffins.

IMAG0636

(There were a dozen of each – this photo was after I put most in the freezer for safe keeping.)

And now – back at work. I was looking forward to a week off school, but our syllabus for the Capstone project was released today, and I think that although school doesn’t technically start until next Monday, it would be in my best interest to only be on half-vacation this week. In addition, Thursday I start my weekly Leadership Foundation course (it runs through 12/15) that I was nominated to attend through work, so I’ll be in the office one less day, which means more work on the days that I am in……oh well – the price of success or something, right?

Happy week!

Lovely Long Weekend

I had such a great weekend, but am sad to be back at work. Sad and tired!

I took Friday as a vacation day, and after a busy morning of homework and grocery shopping, I headed out to pick up Jen for our summerific afternoon! We headed up to Washington Park and parked at Hoyt Arboretum and then walked down to the International Rose Test Garden.

It was so beautiful. The sun was shining. The roses were blooming. The breeze was perfumed.

After hiking back up to the car (much steeper up than down, for some reason), we headed back to Jen’s and sat in her garden and drank lemonade before meeting up with Alisa for an outdoor swim at a public pool.

I have a mild paranoia about public pools, due to the large number of children and other people who may potentially be peeing in the pool.  BUT, I survived. And, by the time we were done swimming, two out of three husbands had magically appeared at the pool. Unfortunately, mine was not one of them, so I hopped in the car and headed home.

The architect and I went out to dinner and then home to rest from my super exhausting day.

Isn't he awesome?

Saturday, I got up bright and early (10 am. Seriously. I don’t even know what happened) and got ready to run. I decided to run in Forest Park since it was so ridiculously hot already. However, I managed to pick the sunniest and steepest loop EVER! When I got back to the car after my 6 mile run, I seriously felt like there were little heat waves rising off my head. I doused myself with my water, and only then realized I hadn’t saved any to drink.

I went back home, and after a cooling off period, got started on homework and housework.

I waxed some cheeses (my parmesan wedges and my new cheddar).

IMAG0438

And then made the architect go to Leisure with me. He’d been working hard on my beautiful tomato cages all afternoon, and I had been working hard on drinking champagne, so we totally deserved it!

Sunday morning was a bit earlier. I hopped on my bike and rode downtown with the architect to pick up my half marathon race packet, and then hopped on MAX to meet Sarah & Michael for brunch.

After returning home, I fired up the smoker, stuffed my hotdogs and waited.

IMAG0439

While smoking the sausages, I gardened. I dug up a large circle around one of my fir trees, the better to mulch around it (and get the grass further away from the tree, thus preventing any lawnmower accidents). When I lifted the bag of mulch (which only weighs like 30 lbs or something), I did something weird and managed to hurt my left shoulder and neck. :(

The architect took off about 5 to head to my cousin’s house for her boyfriend’s birthday bbq (her boyfriend and the architect, in addition to being cousins-in-law, are also co-workers), and I stayed behind to monitor the hotdog situation.

I dug another tree circle (around my Japanese maples) and FINALLY, the hotdogs were done!

I hopped on my bike and rode to the party, only then realizing that I could not turn my head. Good thing I didn’t have to ride home!

We stayed for awhile, the architect played some horseshoes, and then I finally had to go home.

I woke up the next morning and was already hot. And sore. And so I did not do the half marathon. Everyone else I knew that was supposed to be running had already canceled, and I didn’t want to be the only one suffering from heatstroke and quad cramps at the party later.

So, instead I just made party preparations.

I made sangria. And guacamole. And basil lemonade (which, by the way, is a great base for a French 75; just add gin & top with champagne. DELICIOUS!). And strawberry-infused water. And burgers (beef AND turkey) and got everything ready. I took a bunch of pictures, and even brought my camera to work to download them today, but grabbed the wrong usb cord, so no pictures for us!

Except for this one:

Sangria

A lot of people asked for my mojito recipe, so here it is! This was definitely inspired by Maris at In Good Taste.

I made a large batch (not pictured, but about 64 oz of mojito mix prior to adding the club soda).

Strawberry Mojitos

25 LARGE strawberries
LARGE handful of fresh mint leaves
40 oz simple syrup (I made mint simple syrup – I just heated the water and sugar with another large handful of mint)
60 oz rum (I used Bacardi silver)
10 oz fresh lime juice (10 limes!)

Muddle the strawberries, lime rinds (after juicing) and mint leaves together. Stir in simple syrup and rum.  At this point, I removed the limes, left everything else, and put out the (beautiful) jar of mojitos. I instructed everyone to fill a glass with ice, fill the glass half full with the mojito mix, and top with the chilled club soda placed conveniently nearby.  I feel that this worked better than adding the club soda to the mix ahead of time, and also, I didn’t have room in my jar for such things! :)

It was really, really good.

After the awesome barbecue (where the architect served as grill master), we had pie! and S’Mores! and a firepit! And fireworks!

And then, all too soon, it was time to clean up and go to bed (and to try to ignore the fireworks that just kept on going for hours!).

I hope you all had a wonderful Fourth, too!

Shoesday, Interrupted!

No shoesday today…sorry. I have to tell you about my awesome 4-day weekend, instead!

My four-day weekend started Thursday evening when I had to determine what kind of gin drink I was going to have (such hard decisions!).

I went with a martini….

Friday was a busy, busy day. The night before I’d dreamed that the piano delivery guys backed the truck up to my front door, knocking over my trellis and running over all my plants. So I trimmed back our wisteria to try to make it easier for them to get to the front door.

First blooms EVER on this wisteria; it was the first plant I planted when we bought our house

I also interviewed a housecleaner. Yes, I am now that kind of person who is going to pay someone else to wash my floors. I feel simultaneously guilty and extremely happy about that.

Just after she left, the piano! arrived. Yay! It looks so pretty in my house.

I dug up some embarrassing old sheet music.

Not pictured: Bryan Adams & the Complete Chart Hits of 1991

Jasmin loves the piano. She likes to sit on the top while I play, and gets upset when I stop.

IMAG0316

Eventually, I had to stop, though, so I could make a cake. Chocolate butter cake with orange buttercream frosting. It was pretty good (although I think a bit dry), but was fairly popular at the Fiddler on the Roof movie viewing Friday night.

Saturday was another good/long day. I started the birthday cake. I yoga’ed at the newish People’s Yoga in my ‘hood. Such a great class; I can’t wait to make that studio part of my regular practice. After yoga-ing, I headed to Livingscape Nursery. Such a cute place! And they were so friendly. I picked up a couple seed packets and a bunch of starts (every year I say I’m going to do my own tomato/pepper starts from seeds, and every year, I remember that I have cats who would dig them up in a heartbeat, so until I have my greenhouse, it’s starts for me!). I watched the rain from the front porch…

IMAG0328

I spent all Saturday afternoon working on homework, and then took the architect out for dinner for his birthday. The place we’d picked originally was a bit busy, so we walked down street to County Cork and had a laid back meal.

I wore stilettoes! For the first time in over a year! So pretty.

Sunday morning, I worked more on the birthday cake (it was a 36 hour process for this cake) and did a LOT of yard work.

IMAG0326

About 4 pm, people started descending on the house for the architect”s birthday party. I thought afternoon party, because then people would eventually get hungry and go home, but we had so much fun that it was well after dark (i.e. after 10!) before everyone was gone.

There was cake (of course!)

Praline Brioche Rum cake

And a fire.

Fire!

And, naturally, some sing-a-longs. I played the piano for a bit, trying to remind people that I’d only had my piano for 48 hours and wasn’t up to par yet.

After exhausting my repertoire, we switched to a Disney song dance party. So crazy. And so much fun.

IMAG0335

Monday morning, I took the architect out for brunch, and then spent the rest of the day gardening and site planning. Darwin helped out outside for awhile (he’s such a helper!) and then we curled up inside with an architectural scale and some triangulation measurements.

Welcome Wagon!

Keeping an eye on things...

I have the overall site plan drafted out; now I just need to cut down the ugly hedge, put in a nice fence, build a deck and do all the plantings….so that should be done in about 100 years.

IMAG0312

Today came much too soon. Somehow, however, my schedule has worked out so that I will not actually work 5 days in a row again until the last week of June. This week, I work Friday, but since yesterday was a holiday, it’s a 4-day week!  Next week, I have Friday off. The following week, I took Monday & Tuesday as vacation days, so even though I work that Friday, 3-day week! And the next week I have Friday off. Although the last week of June is a 5-day week, the following week I have Monday (7/4!) off AND Friday….yay me!

Happy short week, everyone!

I don’t even have any more clever titles

So – since last I updated you on this crazy life thing I’ve got going on here, so much has happened!

On Tuesday evening, I hit up the track w/ my good friend Alisa & her husband. I ran a mile warm up & then did 4×400 (with 400 recovery jogs) & closed with a half mile cool-down. I didn’t bring my garmin, so I don’t have any idea how long/how fast/etc. that drives me bonkers, by the way. My spreadsheets are incomplete.

Wednesday morning, I woke up & felt decidedly not right. So I stayed home. I did get some homework done, but overall, it wasn’t a super productive day. Which is okay when taking a sick day, right?

Wednesday evening, my left foot started to hurt. This is the non-surgery foot. I didn’t think too much of it, and just went to bed. I woke up 3-4 times in the night with some weird foot pain.

Thursday morning I woke up and my left foot (specifically the big toe joint area) hurt excruciatingly bad. I was pretty sure that something was broken. I went to work & called the orthopedic clinic.  They told me they could fit me in for an X-Ray in about a week. That seemed a bit long to wait to see if I’d broken a toe or a foot or something. I called my Primary Care & although she wasn’t in, another doc in her group was able to see me “as soon as I could get there.” Which was about 15 minutes or so (sometimes it’s handy working in a hospital). I saw the doc, had an X-Ray, and then saw the doc again.

He thought I had a stress fracture. The radiologist disagreed. So – the official diagnosis? No stress fracture. (Other things it isn’t include the plague, schizophrenia [probably], and cataracts. Things it is include who knows?!)

I was referred to PT (which I love – I will always go to PT) and told to ice, elevate, & ibuprofen it up. And so I did.

Friday was a pretty busy day for someone with a not-broken toe. I volunteered at Growing Gardens (I put starts in individual pots and counted tomatoes), finally took my kick-ass prints to get framed (do you have any idea how much framing costs? holy crap is all I can say), and then, stopped by Classic Pianos to scope out the wares.

I had a very specific budget in mind (read: CHEAP) but also had a specific quality in mind (read: not CHEAP sounding). They were so nice to me! I told the sales guy my budget, he took me to the area of the store with those pianos, left me alone to pound on the keys for awhile, and then when I picked out my favorite piano in the store, told me it was twice my price rang (of course) and helped me find one with comparable sound for half the price.

You all! I bought a piano. It is not the nicest piano in the world, but it is so much better than the one I have now! (I don’t have one now, and it is not working for me.) AND AND AND for as long as I own this piano, if I ever want to trade it in for a better, nicer, grander (in my dreams) piano, they will credit me the full price I paid for this piano towards the purchase of the new one! The piano does not depreciate!

This, even more than buying a house, makes me feel like a grown-up.

This is not my piano, but is a reasonable fascimile there of:

(I do not have ugly blue carpet.) As soon as my piano comes to live with me, I will post a picture of the real actual piano (I can’t believe I didn’t take a picture of it last Friday!) and you can all be jealous! It is having its hammers refelted, and will come live with me on 5/27/11. YAY!

After piano-ing, I headed out to Zenger Farms for a tour. So awesome. I was so jealous of the tour guide. Her job is to work on an urban farm! And hang out with wealthy donors like me! (I kid about the wealthy part; I am just a regular donor.)

Finally, after a long day of too much walking, I headed back home. The architect & I toured the estate and then headed out to dinner.

Saturday was another busy day. I finalized the gin tasting notes and cocktail menu, made the awesomest cake in the universe, and cleaned up a bit for the gin tasters.

I had such a great time Saturday night imparting my gin passion to others. We did a formal tasting (well, maybe semi-formal) with tasting notes and information and voting, and then had gin cocktails (or, in the case of some people, beer).

The big gin hit of the night was the Bardenay (from Idaho) in the more traditional London Dry category, although the cucumber & spruce Rogue gin was also quite popular.

I introduced a number of people to the awesome French 75 and am looking forward to a lot of warm summer afternoons sipping French 75s on the patio.

Sunday there was a wee bit of clean-up (not too much; must be getting old when the last straggler is gone before 11 pm and the clean-up takes less than 1/2 hour) and then Sarah came over for asparagus pickling! We each made 8 pints of pickled asparagus, and I can’t wait for them to get properly pickled so that I can crack open a jar and make some awesome bloody marys.

The rest of Sunday was devoted to school work and work work. (Boooo…..)

Today my foot is feeling pretty decent. I’m even considering going for a wee little run tomorrow. My first PT appointment is next Wednesday, and I’m positive they told me to run 3 times before the appointment, just to see how it’s holding up.

This is another 5-day work week, but the big pressure should be off after tomorrow, and then we can return to the regular stresses of my job and figuring out how to integrate all of my new responsibilities.

Happy Monday!
