Birthday Snopocalypse 2011! Specter of Doom!

Fortunately, I had already taken the day off, so I didn’t have to venture out into this mess:

002

So far, I have celebrated by sleeping in & trying to convince the architect that our snowpocalypse last night meant he couldn’t go into work today.

Amy & Brad

Unfortunately he looked outside & decided that he probably should go to work & get paid (so he can buy me presents & other pretty things).

I am now up to the special birthday cup of coffee, then will do the “homework of annoyingness” and later will have the symbolic “lunch with good friend(s)” and then later, the “run of snow and quiet” and later the “dinner and drinks with one’s significant other.”

I love my birthday.

And then I killed everyone, the end

Yesterday was a freak snowstorm in Portland. Granted, we only got 4-6 inches of snow (depending on location & elevation), but it sucked.

As yesterday afternoon wore on, I noticed that facebook statuses of other Portland peeps were starting to announce snow (in a west to east crawl). I looked out the window, and it was definitely snowing.

My boss sent us home at about 3:30. I had driven yesterday, but didn’t think too much of it at the time. The freeway was already backed up, so I went home using my secondary route – 30 to the St. John’s bridge. I got to the bridge, and was on the approach up the hill, when a firetruck went by. Pretty soon, all the cars, from the top of the bridge down, started turning around. Accident on the bridge had closed it.

Traffic hadn’t been TOO bad yet, so I turned around with the rest, hoping to go back to the next bridge (Fremont) to make my way across the river.

Traffic up to 405 was not moving, so I hopped off that road & down to another street, determined to take one of the other bridges.

At this point, it is 4:30, or one hour after getting in my car. It was also at this point that I realized I could not text or make phone calls.

About 5 PM, the architect called (I could RECEIVE calls, apparently). I was not really moving at all at that point. I was trying to decide if I should just try to park somewhere & get on MAX, but there was no where to pull off the road where I was.

Eventually, I made it to the Steel Bridge, and as I was on the approach to cross, the pickup in front of me lost all patience & hopped the curb to drive across a grassy lawn place & onto another street nearby (although at that point, we were so close to crossing the bridge, and all the bridges are like that, so if you needed to cross the river, there was no better way). In the process, his back end spun around & hit the Suburu in front of him. Then he drove off. The angry suburu driver got out & glared. Traffic started moving. We did not. Finally, the pick-up driver parked (like 2 blocks away) and came back. He tried to convince her that he’d done no damage. She wasn’t having it. Finally, they exchanged information. And then, we moved. Well, the suburu moved. My Hyundai? Not as much. I spun my tires & moved inches at a time, but at this point, there was no where to go.

I finally made it onto the final approach to the bridge, and my car just gave up. It died a couple of times, and would only move if I was in reverse. Which wasn’t helpful, because a) there were a ton of (really angry) cars behind me, and b) I couldn’t spin around to drive over the bridge in reverse, which would’ve sucked anyways.

I’ll be honest, internets. I cried. And then I called the architect (yay, the phone was working) and cried. Apparently on speaker phone, so the kick-ass neighbors got to hear my breakdown, too.

And then, like magic, three young men appeared out of the storm. There were actually six men on the bridge, working in teams of three, and pushing cars that weren’t making it. They pushed me all the way up to the top of the bridge so that I could make it across. (I don’t think that bridge crossing has sucked so much since the Race for the Roses 5K when running up that approach in the last 1/3 mile of the race almost made me vomit.) I love those nice young men. Without them, I’d still be on the Steel Bridge, crying.

Once I got to the east side of the river, the rest of the drive home wasn’t so bad – only took about 30 more minutes (usually a 15 minute drive). I pulled into my driveway a little after 6:30, and have never been so happy to be home (part of that happiness was the fact that I’d had to pee since about 3:35).

After I got home (and peed), the neighbors, the architect & I went out for much needed beers & food, and then I was home in bed. There is still snow everywhere. I had the architect drive me to work today, and we drove by a LOT of snowmen. And instead of being filled with joy over the beauty of the snow, I was just filled with an almost overwhelming compulsion to get out of the pickup & knock the heads off all the snowmen, because snow is EVIL!

I lied to you

Internets – I have a confession. I did not go to the gym this morning. I meant to. I went to bed early last night. I set my alarm. I woke up when it went off. I thought about going to the gym this morning.

But I didn’t.

My hamstrings were sore last night – not sure why. (I’m sure it had nothing to do with the 90 minutes each of elliptical & yoga on Saturday followed by a 7.5 mile run.)  I slept poorly – couldn’t fall asleep. Couldn’t stay asleep. I was restless. Noticeably restless, I’m guessing – once when I woke up, the architect was sleeping on the floor next to the bed. I decided that I could really use an extra 1.5 hours of sleep this morning instead of a workout.

Of course, I’ll definitely hop on the elliptical when I get home & crank out 45 minutes or so.  I might be lazy but there’s still HBBC points to rack up!

In other pieces of exciting news:

  1. I have graduated from knee-hab! Today was my very last day. I kinda wanted to hug my PT – she’s pretty awesome & we got along great – but I didn’t. We shook hands instead. I’m not much of a hugger anyway.
  2. I lost 2.8 lbs in the last week! Woo! That not only makes up for the 1.6 I gained last week, but adds a little something extra (1.2 lbs extra). Perhaps the past three days of a) cookie abstention; b) LOTS of water (80 oz or more each day since Friday); and c) my ramping up of the working out is paying off! Since I started publicly posting my weight at the end of November, I have lost 4.8 lbs! Only 13-19 more to go! (I haven’t quite decided yet – it depends on how I feel once I get to goal #1.) If I can continue my trend of losing approximately 5 lbs a month, I should be in the next weight decade by my birthday (what a great birthday gift to me) and smokin’ by the end of April! I am not planning on increasing my mileage lots until March or so, when I get SUPER SERIOUS about my marathon training. Right now, I’m just trying to build up a good base of 20-25 miles/week with 3 runs each week (my PT says I will never be a ‘run every day’, or even ‘run 2 days in a row’ on a regular basis – at least not if I want to be healthy).

In weird, not good news, I think it’s snowing. My work is at a higher elevation than much of Portland (as was my last job), so it snows here more than downtown. Of course it’s also sunny. I think the weather is confused.

Christmas Eve

Well – the snow has stopped. I think it’s raining now. We have a LOT of snow on the ground. I went out and shoveled (again) today -  maybe about an hour, and still didn’t completely clear the sidewalks.

My parents did get to fly out today – and looks like they’ll make it home without any problems.

I’m headed off to a fondue party tonight (yay!) and we’re having a quiet Christmas at home tomorrow.

Happy Christmas (and other winter holidays as is your custom) everyone!

And, because it IS Wednesday, here is a pic of my sister-in-law’s new shoes. Aren’t they fun?

Woo! Snow Day!

Except with 80% less woo. Seriously. This is insane!

The architect and I walked to the grocery store today, because we are hardy! And out of coffee! The store is not so far away (about a mile round trip).

We bought many groceries, put them all in backpacks, and carried them all home. It was heavy, and it’s hard to walk in slippery snow.

Just in case you cannot truly appreciate how much snow we’ve gotten (perhaps a record), I have photos:

In case you can’t tell, that’s about a foot of snow covering my herb garden.  (The architect removed it all with a garden spade, by the way – who has a snow shovel in Portland?)

And here’s the backyard – wheelbarrow full to overflowing, car cold & covered….craziness everywhere!

And because the snow is not only annoying, but also kinda pretty, here’s a photo the architect took yesterday on his 4 hour cross-country ski adventure through the streets of North Portland:

So pretty, don’t you think?

This week, I’m only supposed to work Tuesday & Friday – and I REALLY want to go to work tomorrow. I have things! That need to be done! This week!

BUT, last time I checked, the buses weren’t running in North Portland, and not only that, the bus that takes me up the hill to my work is also not going up the hill. I’m not sure what tomorrow will bring. The city ran out of de-icer, so things are a little crazy here. The airport is closed, and although my parents aren’t scheduled to leave until Wednesday, there is some concern that they may not get to go then (I’m keeping my fingers crossed).

Today, once again, I was unable to run outside – probably not tomorrow, either. This is a little crazy-making, and since my gym is not walking distance, I can’t even go get on a treadmill. I may break down tomorrow (if I’m stuck at home again) and walk to the nearest gym (1.5 blocks away) and beg them to take my money & let me run on one of their treadmills. I did a 90-minute yoga DVD today, and my walk. Yesterday I shoveled (and then it sleeted & snowed & basically erased all evidence of my hard work), and Saturday I ellipticalled, but I need to RUN! I wish I had some of those nifty Yaktrax that I’ve seen the cool kids sporting lately.

No pictures of me all dressed up pretty – we didn’t make it to the holiday party. I understand it was fairly well attended, but I bet most of the attendees were close-in, and not may from outlying areas made it in – it was nasty.

The Ambitious One suggested that we do a winter cocktail party with wine & hors d’oeuvres & fancy dresses – so now we just need to con someone into hosting (I’m perfectly willing to have people over, but not sure that many people WANT to come to North Portland).

I hope everyone’s getting in some good runs & not succumbing to cabin fever yet! (Send wine!)
