weekends

Better late than never?

My weekend report (I know it’s been killing you all day that I haven’t told you what I did when I wasn’t regaling you with my life stories):

Thursday night: book club! And science lesson! It was pretty awesome. Even though I hadn’t read the book (for shame!), I felt extremely well educated by the end of the evening. Thanks, Mr. Pi for the free, impromptu science lesson!

Friday: I worked in the morning, started my lefse, and watched eleventy hundred episodes of Torchwood. I feel like I must have done something else productive that day, but I couldn’t tell you what. I know that I certainly didn’t leave the house.

Saturday: I went for a run/walk, discovered that all the park bathrooms are padlocked for the season, and then spent the afternoon making lefse! YUM! I also did some cleaning & cleaned out my entire dresser! YAY!

Saturday night, even though I was exhausted, apparently I wan’t exhausted enough. I woke up about 1:30 am and was awake until about 5. Needless to say, I was a cheery, cheery beacon of fun Sunday morning.

Sunday morning was spent cleaning out the fridge (I am slowly but surely making my house clean….of course, by the time I get to the last room, I’m pretty sure that the first room will be completely filthy again; of course also by then, I can make dusting a mandatory chore for my pre-teen). Sunday afternoon, I went swimming with the Ambitious One, and then headed to my favorite theater to see Breaking Dawn.

It was just as insane as I expected. No – it was more insane than I expected. I especially enjoyed the wedding night sex bits. Valuable lessons:  sex is truly terrifying, it might kill you, and when you wake up covered in bruises the shape of your husband’s hands, you should definitely reassure him that a) it’s okay; b) he didn’t mean to; and c) you liked it, really. Great message for our teen girls! Although since pregnancy and childbirth involve a lot of broken bones, blood (both for drinking and for making messes of) and emaciation, perhaps it’s a really great way to keep the kids from getting it on. (A well-placed message about birth control wouldn’t have gone amiss, either.)

ANYWAYS – I thoroughly enjoyed the shitstorm, giggled through most of it, and had a great time with some super fun girls women.  My only real complaint (because my issues with how sex & violence were handled are not real) is that Jacob only takes his shirt off once, and that was in the opening scene. What good are sexy teen wolves if they’re always clothed? I’ve read the books, and I believe there was supposed to be lot more nudity. WHERE IS YOUR ARTISTIC INTEGRITY?

This is why I enjoyed the previous movies:

Gratitude Journal

November 21, 2011: I am grateful for my excellent co-workers that make my days much less crappy (and more productive).

November 20, 2011: I am grateful for my beer theater. It is close to my house, has $4 first-run movies before 6 pm, serves decent pizza, and has beer and wine. Also, it has bottle water, which is what I had today.

November 19, 2011: I am grateful for random port-o-potties on my running route.

November 18, 2011: I am grateful that I have a connection to bits of my cultural heritage; I can’t imagine a world without lefse, and am so pleased that I have learned how to do it and have a skill I can pass on to Alvie Bean.

November 17, 2011: I am grateful for coffee. I know it seems like I mentioned it yesterday, but yesterday I only said I was grateful for the coffee maker (in a list of other things). But I really wanted to draw attention to coffee as deserving of its own special day. Coffee is the best beverage ever invented. I don’t understand how I got through so many years never drinking it and thinking it really wasn’t that great. Mmmmmm……coffee.

November 16, 2011: I am grateful for all the little luxuries I have that I often take for granted…my car, my phone, the coffee maker (so very grateful for my coffee maker). It’s so easy to caught up in the things I don’t have that I occasionally forget how very lucky I am. My life is so freaking awesome.

November 15, 2011: I am grateful that I have the kind of job/life/etc. that allows me to afford pretty shoes, and the level-headedness that keeps me from buying (very many) shoes that wouldn’t be practical.

November 14, 2011: I am grateful that I work in a place with lots of little food nooks. It’s always an easy walk to grab more food. Which I do more often than ever, lately.

November 13, 2011: I am grateful for streaming Netflix (and Hulu Plus!). Also, I am grateful for John Barrowman. And my new found love of Torchwood.

November 12, 2011: I am grateful for my awesome friends! I got so much good quality friend-time this weekend! Walks & cocoa & thrifting with her! Ornament painting and dinner and movies with Alisa, Jen, Lisa & Sarah! Cocoa and a chat with her! (I should maybe also mention that I’m grateful for hot cocoa.)

November 11, 2011: I am grateful for laid back evenings at home with the architect.

November 10, 2011: I am grateful to live in Portland, Oregon. It is so beautiful here. I love that we have four seasons, and I especially love autumn.

November 9, 2011: I am grateful for modern medical conveniences that help eliminate unnecessary surprises from my life. Yay for ultrasounds!

November 8, 2011: I am grateful for my brand-new employee who started today, who I am hoping will help take some of the financial reporting burden off my plate & allow me to do a better job on the more big-picture things.

November 7, 2011: I am grateful for weekends and the opportunity to relax and recharge.

November 6, 2011: I am grateful for running – and grateful that I am still able to run. I am also grateful for my proximity to the most awesome running park in the history of the world: Forest Park.

November 5, 2011:I am grateful that I was able to discover enough courage to join Toastmasters. I know this sounds super cheesy, but it’s really made a HUGE difference in my life.

November 4, 2011: I am grateful for the internet, which gives me the ability to work from home, in my pajamas, this morning.

November 3, 2011: I am grateful that I have a good job that is challenging & interesting, if not necessarily catering to my life interests.

November 2, 2011: I am grateful for the architect, who is simply wonderful. He picks up the household slack when I’m busy with schoolwork, brings me chicken fingers on his way home from work, and is simply the most wonderful husband I could ask for…

November 1, 2011:  I am grateful for my (so far, knock on wood) easy and wonderful pregnancy.

Weekend Update – the pictureless edition!

I took zero pictures this weekend. None. Zip. Zilch. I am so ashamed.

There were so many things happening! Friday morning, I headed up to Vancouver to hit some estate and garage sales with Emily. I had so much fun at the first one, picking up a couple books, some old photos (I have a thing), a cutting board (or, as the architect said, “why’d you get a finger cutter?”), and some sewing patterns. I also picked up a garlic press at another sale, some wine glasses (I only buy cheap wine glasses, because they have a habit of getting broken), and a new Halloween decoration. The crowing glory of the entire morning was, after a long trip through rural East Vancouver (including driving by the place I was lost and afraid a few years ago), ending up at a garage sale (that was not HUGE as advertised) that had about 3 dozen pink Juicy velour tracksuits for sale in various sizes, ranging from girls to adult. Emily & I really, really wanted to get a couple, but on learning that they were $50 each, we decided maybe that wasn’t the best way to spend our money, regardless of how funny it would’ve been.

After leaving the Couv, I went home, ate, did a little homework and then headed to Overlook Park for the Organic Brewers festival. I had such a good time, and couldn’t even believe it when it was 5 hours later and time to meet the architect for dinner!

Saturday was a buy morning – so many errands! I went to REI to get new bike shoes, then Title 9 for sports bras, then the Farmer’s Market to pick up the CSA share that I split with Sarah, then my tailor for my hemmed pants, then the Home Brew store for beer ingredients, New Seasons for groceries, the dry cleaners to pick up my skirts, and finally (FINALLY!) home so I could do some homework.

Sunday morning, I went for an early, long run, and then once I was home, I made cheddar and smoked my bacon. I was also going to stuff my hotdogs and smoke them, as well, but was unable to find my casings. My giant sausage stuffer will never be used!  (Actually, I ordered new casings yesterday, so they should be arriving Wednesday so that I can make the hotdogs in advance of my 4th of July bbq. I should maybe tone down the despair a bit.)

Finally, the cheese and bacon and dishes done, the architect & I headed to Leisure for dinner and beers, in what is quickly becoming a new Sunday evening wind-down tradition for us.

This morning, getting up was so hard. I am exhausted!  I can’t believe the day is half over already!

I hope you’re having a great Monday!

How did this happen?

Who made it Monday again?

I know I have three-day weekends, but they go by WAAY too fast. It was a good weekend. I got to have beer with some friends (most of whom are blogless – WEIRD!) (Also – brew review coming soon – I’m waiting for my pictures to get developed. ha. or emailed to me!)

Saturday there was yoga – of a sort – and decaf & scones with two of my favorite people.

There was a lot of homework (and another aced quiz! it’s almost like I’m learning).

There was a long walk with the architect.

A gym date with the kick-ass neighbor.

Some relaxing. Some FANTASTICO homemade tomato soup & pesto cheese sandwiches. (Also, I need an immersion blender – could someone get on that for me?)

There was some Battlestar Galactica (season 1 – the mini series), which I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t seen before (and loved). There was some reading of trashy books (which I’m ashamed to say I loved. Damn you, Eliza with no blog to link to anymore [some day I may forgive you for that] that suggested the first one in the series!).

It was a very good weekend.

And now, it’s Monday. *sigh*

One of the best days

Yesterday I was on such a high all day – it was a very nearly perfect day.

But, before I get to the perfect day, let’s revisit the previous days, shall we?

Friday I went to my last day of my part-time gig at OMSI. I was really glad to help them out -they are super fantastic! :)

After work, I rushed home to get a run in before our guests came over for dinner. I did 5 miles in about 55 minutes; and then got started on dinner. The architect made hummus and I attempted to make pita bread, but unfortunately, my memory wasn’t perfect, and I thought it only needed 1 hour to rise instead of two. So, we made baked tortilla strips & peppers for the hummus instead!

I made an asparagus risotto & some salad, and some chocolate chip banana bread for dessert. I also made some simple syrup for the French 75s. Of which we had many. According to wikipedia, the French 75s got their name because drinking one “felt like being shelled with the powerful French 75mm howitzer artillery piece.”  They were delicious. And deadly.

Saturday I didn’t feel quite as peppy as usual. I did very little in the morning, although I eventually hauled my ass off the couch where I was enjoying a Buffy marathon to go pick up my race packet. Just as I was leaving, I ran into her, and we chatted as we tried to navigate the convention center. On my way home, I accidentally stopped at Taco Bell -only the 2nd time in recent memory (i.e. probably 10 years) that I’ve done that. But – it totally cured my hangover! Yay for nasty tacos!

That evening, the architect & I had some pizza (what do you mean you don’t need to carbo load for a 5K?) and I went to be early.

I got up bright & early Sunday morning & got dressed for the race. I knew it was supposed to be nice, but wasn’t sure how nice it would be at 7 AM. I wore my capris, my lucky race shirt, and my green long-sleeved hoodie. I packed a little bag with a sweatshirt, gloves, camera & cell phone.

I choked down a clif bar & some water (it’s hard for me to eat that early, but I knew if I didn’t, I’d be miserable) and then drove my car to the nearest MAX station & caught MAX to the convention center.  I got there just in time to see the half marathoners start – although I didn’t see any of the peeps I knew were running the half that day.

I wandered about for a while, checked my bag, got my photo taken, and then when the group calisthenics started, I went out to the race chute. At that point, Emily found me, and I found myself starting in the 7 minute mile group.  I tried to be okay with everyone passing me at the beginning (I meant to start with the 9 minute mile people), and to remind myself that there was no reason what-so-ever to even try to keep up.

The first mile ran past the Rose Garden up to the Broadway Bridge, and mile 1 came at the bottom of the west side of the bridge. I left my Garmin on auto-lap, because I was afraid if I tried to hit the lap button while running I might accidentally stop the watch, and that would suck. Mile 1: 9:03 (woo!)

Mile two ran down broadway a ways, and then turned around to end up on Naito.  Between the Broadway & Steel bridges, there was a loud music station set up, and they were currently blaring “Rock Star” which had just finished on my iPod, so I took out my earbuds (which were not staying put well, anyway) and listened to the music. That was also the Mile 2 marker: 8:54 (FAST!)

Just under the Burnside Bridge, I heard the motorcycle on the course. Which seemed weird. But it turned out to be the police escort for the half marathon leaders…fortunately, they only passed me the once (they went further on Naito than the 5K runners), and I still finished first,  I think. We turned around & ran back Naito and then began the ridiculously steep & harder than I would’ve thought possible ascent up the Steel Bridge.

I run on hills a LOT. I’m known for it. I love me some hills. And I do have to say that was where I started picking people off – I tried really hard to maintain my pace (I have a steep hill Jedi mind trick – when the hill is redonkulously steep & I want to walk it, I start counting my steps [like 1, 2, 3, 4; 2, 2, 3, 4, etc.] & tell myself that I can stop running when I get to a certain number – I picked 200[2, 3, 4] for the Steel Bridge, and just like always, reached the top of the hill before I got to 200.  Works almost every time!

The bridge was hard, though, & I was really pushing myself. It was, I think, the only time I’ve ever really thought I was going to vomit during a run.

Then, I got across the bridge, and Sarah was waiting to cheer me on! That was so awesome! Right across the bridge I hit Mile 3 – 9:33 (stupid hill), and then turned the corner to the finish line. At that point, there were a couple of people in front of me who’d been annoying me for the whole run, so I broke into a sprint for the last .1 miles. I saw Emily cheering for me as I approached the finish line, and I finished strong! (Last .1 – 8:24 pace). I got a rose, and a medal, and a bottle of water!

Emily & I went to grab my bag & then we got our pics taken under a balloon arch – just like prom!

We found Sarah & then went back to the Steel Bridge to sit in the sunshine & wait for the rest of the PB&J half marathoners.

We saw Jen & Zach on their way to a super strong finish.

Then we watched Julianne pace Alisa to an 11-minute PR! And right after Julianne & Alisa, we saw HTC crossing the finish line.

We ran into Solo Runner (who was sitting out with an injured hamstring) & Meechelee who not only PR’d in the half, but was also celebrating a birthday!

After some photo ops, I headed home to shower & change before meeting the PB&J gang at Mother’s for brunch. We had a couple cocktails & some fantastic food.

I spent the afternoon in the garden – I planted my viney plants, one tree, some greens, more peas, beans & beets. I would’ve spent more time outside but we’re having our annual winged ant migration, and it got to be a bit much.

I love these beautiful spring days – they juxtapose so nicely with the (also appreciated) spring rain. (without that rain, my garden would be so sad, as would my water bill.)

Today is sad, because I am at work merely looking at the nice weather, but tomorrow is also supposed to be beautiful, and Alisa & I have a track workout planned.

I wish I had some photos of the weekend to share, but I forgot to put my memory card back in my camera, and the camera refused to work without it.  There are (or will be, at least) photos up at the other PB&J sites.

The official results are up:

Name: Amy
City: Portland
Sex: F
Age: 32
Chip Time: 28:19
Chip Pace: 9:07
Age Division: 39/165
Place Overall: 420/1239
Sex Overall: 174/812
Gun Time: 28:27
Gun Pace: 9:09
Time to Start Line: 0:08

My first 10K, I came in last in my age division. My first 5K (9/06) I came in at about 41 minutes. I mean, I’m never going to wonder if I placed in my age division, but to come in the top 25% of my age division really means a lot to me. I’m not sure how much faster I’ll get at this point – but I’m pretty pleased with my 9:07 pace for this. I feel so strong & so fantastic.

But do you know what the best part is? My other runner friends, regardless of their relative speeds, were almost as excited as I was! I love that we can support each other so much, and that when one of us hits a personal goal, that we’re all so pleased! There’s no competition between any of us, and that is the best part. I love my runner buddies! You guys are the best.

Weekend photo essay

Has been postponed due to not having the camera in order to download photos.  It was an interesting weekend, though.  So, you know, hold your breath & stuff for the photo essay!

The architect is at work right now, which sucks.  And although it is a holiday weekend, it seemed extra short.  I usually have Mondays off anyways, but I don’t feel that it was extra non-laborious.  I didn’t slave away being domestic today, with the exception of laundry & my bi-monthly grocery shopping.

I feel crabby.  That may have something to do with the unexpected houseguest.  Blah.

Next weekend will be very industrious.  We will finish the bulk of the driveway work AND I really need to start digging out the expanded garden so I can get the garlic planted in the next few weeks.  I bought some bulbs today, so I’ll want to get those planted in the next month, too.

Also found out today that my in-laws are coming 9/17 – 9/22.  I love my in-laws, so I’m actually very excited – I just like a bit more warning when guests are coming.  At least they’ll be here for the Pirate Festival!
